This week at Saab: Tuesday-Debut new EV, Friday-Go Out of Business

endofsaab

On Tuesday, hot on the heels of receiving a 86 million SEK ($12 million-ish USD) grant a week earlier, the Saab ‘coalition’ debuted the 2010 ZE Saab 9-3 electric car. It is a shame it will likely never see the light of day.

The ZE Saab (ZE stands for zero emissions) had twin electric motors putting out 335 HP, propelling it to 62 MPH in around 6.5 seconds. The car was estimated to have a range of 150 km (93 miles) on a 26 kWh battery supplied by Boston Power, with additional/larger batteries reported to be in the works for the future.

The Saab coalition had announced 100 units to be produced in 2010, and predicted up to 10 billion 60,000 by 2020.

Unfortunately for the ZE 9-3, the wheels fell off the bus at Saab on Friday, with the announcement that GM’s replacement suitor for Koenigsegg, namely Spyker cars, could not come to a agreement to buy the beleaguered brand. GM Europe President, Nick Reilly made this statement:

“We regret that we were not able to complete this transaction with Spyker Cars. We will work closely with the Saab organization to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner.”

GM did further explain the failure of the deal by saying, “Despite the best efforts of all involved, it has become very clear that the due diligence required to complete this complex transaction could not be executed in a reasonable time. In order to maintain operations, Saab needed a quick resolution.”

I basically interpret this to mean that GM is once again paranoid (see Opel deal) about giving up control of newer/future platforms (and the intellectual property that goes with them) to a small shell company, that is backed by a huge Russian banking group (this time the Konvers Group)…which as far as I can tell is controlled by the mob (or something not too dissimilar to it).

A fellow by the name of Alexander Antonov controls the Konvers group, whose business practices just happened to make him the recent target of a assassination attempt this year on Moscow streets. (He was shot half dozen or so times…no death) Reuters reports the attempt was a result of his, “professional activities.” Probably not the best partner.

/good call GM

In a way Saab will still live on. Chinese auto maker BAIC acquired the rights to three current/old generation Saab vehicle platforms. The salvageable parts of the technology will move from Sweden to Beijing for integration into BAIC’s lineup. BAIC expects new products from Saab technology as soon as 2011. The new models on this platform will not be marketed as Saabs.

Most exciting promotional video of a upcoming electric car ever (it is like they knew):

Is it time to agree on less pretentious markings for EV’s? Most new EV’s are covered with “Hey, I’m electric!” decals. Maybe something like the carpool lane sticker? EV are exiting the world of “new and different” and entering the world of “mainstream”.

Thanks to you, FLASH, Tag, Lyle, Nasaman, Statik and all of you who make me an afficionado to gm-volt.com.

Progress is slow but sensible in Belgium, after our deputy minister of Finance who made a sensible gesture by giving up to 30% of the purchase price of an EV in tax credit, and other similar moves for the businesses that buy EVs and place recharging ports on their parking lots, the ministry of economy organizes a workshop in January about clean mobility and invited your humble servant to make a communication on the stakes about the EVs (and their likes). I must say I’ll use a lot of what I have learned on this site through both the posts and your comments. Thanks for that.

This is a good point, and it applies both inside and out. For example, my wife hates a digital speedometer, and that was one of the major reasons we didn’t buy a Prius.

If we want the Volt to go mainstream, there should be a configuration for an analog speedometer on the left LCD. It should feel as much like a regular car as possible.

I can see a lot of the styling of the Volt in the ZE Saab. It would have been a nice addition to the fleet of EVs coming out. But GM is right in not selling its electric technology. Everyone will want to reverse engineer the Volt to gain whatever they can. But selling the designs to anyone would have enabled them to compete very effectively with GM. GM will never allow the Chinese to produce a ZE, IMHO.

I’m sure there’s dozens of innovative places to put a charging port that none of us have thought of yet. Lots of nooks and crannies on a car! I agree this one’s pretty clever though.

I agree…or at least to the extent of the coalition finding another partner somewhere to continue the work. They appear to have enough backing (and know how/infrastructure) to actually produce and sell a EV, and in this world right now, that is plenty good enough. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see the project reborn somehow.

Kudos on the speaking gig, and getting so involved…thats takes a lot of effot.

I really like how you guys (in Belgium) do the incentive thing-as long as the car qualifies you get the 30% off (up to 9K €)…simple/no penalties.

I think the charging station rebate thing is a bit of a non-starter/PR greenwashing, not sure who is going to go through ‘the dance’ to get up to 250 €. I’ll wager the process ends up making it too difficult and costly if you have to used approved methods/contractors rather than just doing it the way that suits you the best…especially if you consider the value of your time into the equation.

The story tells a familiar story. Remember how Chrysler was bringing out EVs of some sort, just as the ax was falling. The real story is those within the corporation who have access to the economic health status of the company, keep that information to themselves, so those actually bringing a product to market do not know the “real” constraints to their effort. Not to put too fine a point on it, but to keep the talent within the company ignorant is to deny the talent of the opportunity to actually contribute to the solution, IMHO.

This is one reason a none-auto exec like Whitacre turned loose by U.S. Treasury is not in the best interests of anyone except Whitacre. First off, Opel should have been sold as FH set out. Whitacre’s board cut him off at the knees. That’s 100,000 union jobs gone-for no good reason except to prep for the coup. Just this past couple days the U.S. financial community commended GM for being in better shape than expected. That’s to FH’s credit. What’s more, the Saab deal wasn’t reached in the time set by Whitacre…So what if it takes more time. Good grief Saab has a stellar 65 year innovative history; a stellar organization; and stellar management. Whitacre playing tough guy. Let me say the Saab sales figures are an L of a better than a lot of brands. There’s other blunders in the making. Such as GM could easily use the NUMMI plant in Cal. for any number of reasons. When it closes in March- an irreplaceable loss.

On the subject of Buick, I just read a glowing review of the LaCrosse. Said that GM was shortchanging the car by comparing it to the Lexus 350. Seems like Buick is going to do very well. Super lineup going forward.

Chevy vs. Toyota (low-end) and Cadillac vs Lexus (high-end) is all they need here. You can do this new GM, make it so. Failure to heed this advice may yield disastrous financial results for the new GM in 2010. /out  (Quote)

I think the charging station rebate thing is a bit of a non-starter/PR greenwashing, not sure who is going to go through ‘the dance’ to get up to 250 €.I’ll wager the process ends up making it too difficult and costly if you have to used approved methods/contractors rather than just doing it the way that suits you the best…especially if you consider the value of your time into the equation./you can let me know how it goes when you get your Ampera, (=

    Hi Statik,

My opinion too, especially when the redtape is necessary (I just invested in new double glazed windows for which we may get some regional financial incentive, until now I had to fulfill 25 pages (very difficult to understand) and visit 6 administration to get signatures, etc. … and the process is not totally finished … in total Ill perhaps get a 750€ incentive, that is 10% of the investment)

What is more interesting is the 120% amortization in two year of the EV purchased by businesses.

Happy Xmas to you and your relatives and I cannot wait to read your next analyses.

I am beginning to think maybe this silent operation isn’t so great and a pedestrian alert is a good idea. Yesterday I almost got run over for the second time in my life by an EV, which is impressive considering how few EVs there are. First a Tesla a while back when I was in school (wasn’t actually that close and the Tesla driver saw me right away), and then a crazy lady last night gunning her RAV4 EV in an LA parking lot (much closer and she did not see me).

I would love to drive a car that silent and think a ped alert would be annoying, but if a young person like myself with good hearing has had issues with the small # of cars on the road, perhaps there is a good reason why GM and Nissan are concerned when we get to larger #s.

Of course, people could just drive better but no dice on that here in LA.

Dave K.: The Saab 9-3 video is a reminder of the near silent operation of EV. Daily driving is a pleasurable experience.=D~

I haven’t thought about this issue lately, but I think that both drivers and pedestrians need to take responsibility, such that they both don’t occupy the same space at the same time. A passive noise maker just gives the driver an excuse -”they should have heard me!”

With all the background noise on the streets of NYC, it’s almost impossible to hear current vehicles coming and yet it doesn’t seem like too many pedestrians get flattened (I don’t have any stats to back that up, but then again it’s just as valid an observation as two run ins with electric vehicles). Gil: So what does happen to the technology behind SAAB’s electric vehicle.Does it sit on the shelf?

GM doesn’t have a convertible in its lineup of electric vehicles. We could hope that with the success of the Volt and other Voltec shoot-offs that they would take the design off the shelf and produce this vehicle in the future.

    http://blogs.edmunds.com/greencaradvisor/2009/12/coalition-debuts-battery-electric-ze-saab-9-3-convertible-says-100-more-scheduled.html

“A coalition consisting of Saab, lithium-battery-maker Boston-Power, the electric-powertrain company Electroengine, the project-management firm Innovatum and the Swedish electric-energy industry trade group Power Circle received a $12 million grant from the Swedish Energy Agency and came up with this high-performance ZE (zero emissions) 9-3.” These Swedish partners may have a vested interest in the ZE’s technology so GM would need to pay them if they dissolve Saab but keep the technology.

It would be neat if GM could resolve the shut-down in such a way that the ZE convertible could be revived in the near future. The car does offer much greater range: “As for drive range, Boston Power’s advanced cells are said to be able to keep the car moving for up to 185 miles between charges.”

Happy trails to you ’til we meet again.

Interesting, but I’d have thought that Statik would have told us if SAAB was going to be rescued by GM. Maybe he got distracted. I’d like to see SAAB survive, especially if GM can benefit from some intellectual property. (I’d “pass” on the convertible too – I wonder what that does for areo?).

The IP is certainly still GMs…anything SAAB has/builts is present elsewhere in the mothership. The new platform that GM doesn’t want to let go in this case was to be for the new 9-5, which is based off the Epsilson II (which the Opel Insignia and Buick Lacrosse currently roll on). GM has had a wicked hard time getting it just right for some reason, but most of the growing pains are out of the way. (The new Cadillac XTS and Buick Regal out of Oshawa will be next to show up off this base).

As for the SAAB being ‘rescued’ by GM (through bags of money from the Swedish government) after the Spyker deal fell through….that is a development after the story was penned yesterday.

Truth be told, I it is still probably a footnote at best. It really is a non-story at this point….there is some kind of exploratory meeting going to be held on Saturday I assume to find out just how much coin/subsidy the Swedish government would have to give GM to keep the doors open. It is not terribly uncommon to see something like this, it would take a Herculean effort/commitment for a last minute save to go down at this point. (imo)

ccombs: I am beginning to think maybe this silent operation isn’t so great and a pedestrian alert is a good idea.

Each winter I spend a couple of weeks at a Florida retirement community where there are lots of electric golf carts on the community roads. I know they are there. I know I should look even if I don’t hear anything, but I still walk in front of one of these things on every trip. Since they only use these golf carts inside the community, drivers are pretty alert for pedestrians, but when people are driving their normal commute and pull into a parking lot, they’ll forget that their electric car is silent. After a few dozen people get run over in mall and supermarket parking lots, the government will mandate some sort of sound device on electric vehicles. It’s only a matter of time.
