In the passing of another milestone, GM has finally announced the paint colors the Chevy Volt will be available in at the start of production: Black, Silver Ice Metallic, Cyber Gray Metallic, Crystal Red Metallic, a premium White Diamond Tri-Coat, and an unnamed Silver Emerald.
They have also announced a contest to name this signature exclusive Volt paint color which is the familiar silver with emerald hue shown in the photo above.
To enter the contest you create a unique name for the color and submit it at the link below. The contest starts today at 8:00 AM EDT and will run until November 4th at 8:00 AM .
From all of the submissions they receive, GM will choose three finalists “based equally on originality, creativity, and the ability to capture the innovation and spirit of the Volt.” Then, a public consumer vote will take place and from the three finalists a winner will be chosen. That vote will take place from November 16th at 8 AM to December 1 at 8AM also on this site.
The three finalists and their guests will get free all-expense-paid trips to the LA Auto Show on December 2nd. The paint color winner will be announced on December 1st and be given the exclusive opportunity to test drive a pre-production Chevy Volt.
Though not confirmed, it is possible that charge-sustaining (generator) mode will be included in the test drive.
“We want to invite consumers into the development process of the Chevy Volt and give people an opportunity to be part of our program,” said Maria Rohrer, director, global Volt and global marketing operations at Chevrolet. “We’re looking for a color name that captures the innovation and spirit of the Volt.”
As the Internet’s oldest and leading independent Chevy Volt fan site, right here on GM-Volt.com you have the opportunity to enter your name and the name you choose for the color by clicking the link that says ‘Submit Your Name Here‘ at the end of this post.
For what it’s worth, I have chosen Freedom Earth Silver, signifying freedom from oil.

I want to take a few days at least to think. I’m wondering if exact current colors would help. I just need to see all the exact colors to get the right inspiration. Maybe if I go over to the Chevy Store today, and get a feel for what we are all talking about. (It would be really helpful if there were actual color samples on the top here.)
The type of light cast by the CFL bulbs over my laptop are not the “true color rendering” type, and, maybe that is what’s the influence over my laptop even for the picture above.
I’ll just submit something tomorrow or Saturday after I visit the Chevy Store today, once I get the true inspiration of the color.

For all these lighter colors, perhaps it has to do with radiant heat reflectivity for reduction of heat loading and latent heat buildup for when the Volt is parked in the sun all day, versus for the AC excessive loading (thus range retention).
There are terrific things you can do with paint colors in this regard. It was truly hell here in Austin last Summer, with 68 days above 100 degrees.
This common sense being 100 years later as an opposite from Henry Ford’s “The customer can have any color he wants, as long as it is BLACK” (for the “tin lizzy”).

The contest to name the silver emerald color is a bit disturbing. It seems GM marketing may still consider this as a niche market for the “green” crowd.
If anyone at GM is listening, please know that for many people on this forum, perhaps more than half, saving the environment is not our top immediate concern. There are plenty of other reasons not to use gasoline.
For example, Iran is the world’s 4th largest oil exporter. They are enriching uranium and shouting “Death to America.”
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/10/31/iran.nuclear/index.html
Suicide bombers strike knowing their families will be set for life. Where does this money come from? Where did Osama Bin Laden get his money?
And when gas prices went over $4/gallon, we ended up in the worst recession in 50 years. Was that a coincidence?
We need to stop thinking of alternative transportation as just a “green” issue.

Why not use some ‘earthy’ colors? A light green, a light blue, beige, ’sun’ colors (light yellow / orange).

This is not related to the naming theme, but I saw an article on the USAToday website about trying to sell Plug-in/Electric vehicles to the public. The vehicle pictured was the Chevy Volt. That got me thinking about how well GM has sold the Volt as the “poster child” for these categories of vehicles. If anything, the “halo effect” that this vehicle was suppose to generate appears to be working.

Im sure they went w/what’s popular now, which is silver cars (no rust orange, and exotic colors like that). Black & white are shoe-ins ofcourse. The angle might also be to try to stick to hi-end colors, ones that you might expect to see on a Mercedes/Lexus/Caddy. Maybe because the cost for this car is 40K.
However, for those who want to make a bold statement with their EV, you can always get a custom paint job (or just plaster it with bumper stickers and a personalized plate).

I like the colors but there could be more in the first round of offerings….a blue? a green? On the ‘other’ volt site a video there on the color selection process mentions that ‘consumers are bored with the black, white, silver, and greys and want more color.’ They sure answered that concern by offering red (but no blue, green, yellow etc..) to go along with those 3 grey/silvers that consumers are bored with. I want mine in blue…..now starting to think I may be waiting longer before I decide to buy my volt. I love this car otherwise.

Fair Disclaimor: I did vote.

“So, what we need to do, I think, is take steps to destroy oil as a strategic commodity, to destroy its monopoly, 96% or so, over transportation. …There’s a pretty good analogy here that has been invented by my friend and sometime co-author, Anne Korin. She and I wrote it up in an op-ed a couple of years ago called, “Turning oil into salt.” Anne’s observation is that until a little over a hundred years ago, for millennia, salt was a strategic commodity. It was the only way to preserve meat… It had been true for centuries that if your country or region had a salt mine, it was a big deal. [T]hen, 110 years or so ago, as the electric grid came into the US and Europe, refrigeration and freezing turned out to be superior to salt and a more affordable way to preserve meat. [With]in relatively few years, salt was destroyed as a strategic commodity. …Now, we still have salt [but], do we know where it comes from? …Are we salt independent? Nobody really gives a damn unless they’re in the salt business. Salt is actually kind of boring. It’s just a reasonable commodity that is bought and sold in international commerce. We need to do that to oil. We need to make it boring.”

Besides, American lawmakers talk about invading/destroying other regimes all the time (”should we assassinate Hugo Chavez and save the cost of an invasion ?”).
Blowback sucks. Too bad short term gains like Operation Ajax usually lead to long term problems:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ajax
Too bad the NPT allows nuclear enrichment, as Iran points out all the time. And they are fully open to the IAEA, which would immediately detect if they are enriching beyond the amount necessary for power generation (which allows them to export more oil and natural gas, by the way. Why NOT use their own uranium resources to generate nuclear power, like 40 other countries are doing ?)

It is obvious that GM did not run these colors through a focus group. How energy efficient is Black? Your car will suck much more power from the grid trying to keep the interior cool or run your battery down. Light colors reflect more radiant heat. My vote is for a emerald blue-green. Can we custom order our own color (within reason) if we place a down payment? Lyle why don’t you help GM out by putting up some sample colors that have been popular in the past beside these proposed colors and we can vote on our preferances. If there colors lose out substantially they still lhave time to reconsider.

It looks like it only costs about $66 aftermarket:
http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Underglow-Underbody-Neon-Light/dp/B000V8QLQ8
Probably doesn’t take much power, since it is LED’s.
And PATTERNS: STAND ALONE, PULSE, CHASE, ZIG ZAG, RANDOM, & MORE
on a brand new Electric Blue car, these would look great.
I wonder if anything came of that idea to add sound effects out a speaker for the slow, silent creep (to alert blind people) – a nice UFO hovering noise would go nicely with these lights.

Maybe they could always do a WHITE roof, instead. Then you could get a black one with the white roof and it would be cooler. Although it might look like a Mini. Or a panda. Or police car.
Actually, that wouldn’t be so bad.

Hi stuart22,
I’m actually breathing pretty easy, and I do feel that green motivation is an important part.
My main concern is that GM marketing doesn’t see this as an either/or scenario, and pigeon-hole the Volt as GM’s “green” offering.
For example, there’s a ton of resentment built up against the oil companies. This is widespread. Many people who could care less about the environment wouldn’t mind sticking it to the oil companies if they had the chance. If GM marketing could somehow tap into this feeling, they could have a gold mine.
And then there’s the convenience factor. Many people hate going to the gas station, which is something the Volt largely eliminates. A lot of people would buy the Volt just for that alone.
Bottom line: There is potential broad appeal for the Volt. So if GM marketing decides to pigeon-hole the Volt as GM’s green offering, this would be a huge mistake.

Good question. Sure, an exterior white looks good. Combine an exterior white with just a single light choice of interior, like salmon, and we have a problem. Complimentary interior color options should add to the appeal of the exterior. When is doubt go darker on the interior or be willing to do a lot of cleaning.

I’ve heard of those proposals before. The main reason Iran wants to do in-country enrichment is so their domestic electricity industry is not hostage to future “sanctions” from the West, for yet another complaint from their old masters (Mossad claims to have evidence linking Iran to some rocket in Lebanon ? Lights out in Tehran…)
If they get all their fuel from Russia and/or France, it will be easy for a future US-led Security Council to “withhold” needed enriched uranium until they “comply” with some demand. Few countries want to be at the mercy of other countries, especially hostile ones.
I think the negotiations are about enrichment to 20% for medical uses (tracer isotopes). I don’t think Iran would allow their low-grade fuel enrichment to be outside of their control. They aren’t happy about France either, which has been pressured by the US in the past to break contracts with Iran. They might agree to a Russian deal, for the medical isotopes…
Other nations with their very own “national interests”. What a concept…

I don’t consider myself overly creative but I like my submission, “E-sprit Energy”.
BTW, I got to sit in a Volt yesterday at the “Business of Plugging IN” exposition and talk to Rob Peterson. It WAS very exciting. That car was grey, don’t know which of the three if any, but it looked good. Someone noticed that the PPV’s did not have lens colors on the road trip. Per Rob, they will not build proper head lamps until the last moment possible because the first lamps can cost as much as $250,000 and they want to get them just right so they don’t have to redesign them. Also, the PPV’s “are not painted”, “because we know how to get that right, but don’t want the expense of putting good paint on something that might end up in a crash test”. He said to say hi to Lyle, he is a fan! They did not have a car out in the parking lot to drive like some of the other exhibitors. “It just would not do justice to the Volt by limiting it to 5 MPH in a parking lot.” Plus they are VERY hard to get ahold of one. The one in the exhibit hall was probably an IV’er? He did get nervous when anyone started moving controls around (they are much more fragile than a production unit). The interior controls had a distinctly “apple-like” quality. The two LCD screens were impressive, but I expected at least one of them to be bigger (they are 7″). The interior seemed VERY comfortable, but the center “console” (battery) was good sized and isolated you from a passenger. The trunk seemed fairly spacious.

Perhaps you need to step back further from Mossadeq and the conditions that permitted his election. The previous officeholder was assassinated to clear a path for this “man of the people”.
While I agree it is a mistake to get involved in Iranian politics, it is also a mistake to step away once you have become involved.
If we refuse to do anything about energy indepence our choices are:
Distorting our democratic values to support a strongman of our own choosing who will do business with us at the cost of our soul as he inevitably begins to rely on the use of force.
or
Paying an even higher price in money to a homegrown nationalist thug who’s regime is financed and kept in power by our need for strategic material. And then still sell our souls for doing nothing of the people held captive there are kept in line by the use of force.
Instead of composing an apology we should be doing more to solve the technical energy problem that has led to so many social problems.

I couldn’t agree more. 3 shades of gray. That is crazy. Give us a dark blue, green, and maybe yellow. Who needs more than one gray to choose from? I want mine in dark blue. I might just have to get a prius so I can get the color I want.

The conditions that permitted Mossadeq’s election was his passionate speeches urging Iran to nationalize the oil industry which had been controlled by Britain since 1913 (the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, later named British Petroleum, or BP). Signing a contract at gunpoint is usually not considered legal. The British could have calmed the Iranians simply by giving them a better royalty on the oil they were stealing, but greed has a way of leading to one’ ruin.
The previous “Prime Minister” was a general, chosen by the Shah, and assasinated by a soldier loyal to the Shah, because he was getting too powerful.
You should learn more about the oil industry. The U.S. doesn’t get oil from Iran, and trying to guarantee oil supplies from the other Perisan Gulf countries costs $100’s of billions in military operations. The U.S. would be better served spending those $100’s of billions on domestic windpower and solar PV arrays, and electrifying its vehicles, the biggest users of petroleum.

Hm. Suicide bombers don’t just do it for their families. They do it for themselves. For every man with four wives, three men won’t have any wives. But they are promised 70 virgins in heaven…
Btw, my opinion: those colors are disgusting. You know how the same songs play over and over on the radio, and the next time you hear it again, you just want to gag? That’s kinda how this is. From the video: “Customers are sick of the blacks, whites, silvers, and grays.” So what do they pick? Black, white, silver, gray of course (plus the Christmas colors).

With a ground breaking car, colors shouldn’t be bought off the shelf. I remember in the 70’s Volkswagen came out with bright colors. Why not try bright colors. I’m not going to buy a new car at your price with your “same old choice” colors, I’d like to choose from a wide spectrem. Call then electrified or some name that reflex on electric.
What do you think we are office bound geeks with dull office taste for color?

To me it is a FOGGY silver, nothing innovative here. I agree with every one on th post. My word t GM: If you are in an innvative phase, please innovate !!!
Anyway, I do want to try such a car and submitted a name that might capture the “innvation and spirit” of the car: IKAROS SILVER
In mythology, IKAROS, or Icare in french, was the son of Dédale who built him a pair af wings using wax and bird feathers to escape and return home. That is for Innovation. Spirit will come from pronouncing Icare in french (Ee-car (e-car)) get it ?
See you on the road

The signature color of the Volt (Viridian Joule?) looks good in person. And it picks up on the ambient colors in the area. The Alternative Vehicle Show of 2008 in Santa Monica had the Volt in a darker area with spot lights. The green shade came out. The Volt looked much more blue at the L.A. Auto Show of 2008 in the bright neutral lighting.
We’ve come a long way from the Malibu Volt mule Canada test car in burgundy.
=D~
