I want the Volt to succeed so we can stop sending $$$ to OPEC and create employment for Americans – as a non-American living in Florida, I honestly think the world will love this IF it does what it says it will do, or lives up to the hype.

I will buy one, somebody has to be the guinea pig.

Because the drilling projects that politicians mention not enough oil to make much of a difference.

I don’t think people realize exactly how much oil we burn every day. We’re talking tens billions of barrels per year — a few hundred million barrels here and there are just drops in the bucket.

You’re forgetting that oil is a liquid market.

If we only buy from people we like, then the people we don’t like will sell to everyone else — the only people who pay higher prices are us,and nothing else really changes.

I concede that this model is a little simplistic, but changes like the one you suggest will only have a very limited impact.

Replace 30% of the oil use with conservation, and now we’re talking actual change. But conservation is hard expensive work that can’t just be done with a stroke of a congressional pen.

I won’t argue that plenty of buyers don’t place looks at the top of their priority list (me included), but it is on the list somewhere. There are also a lot of buyers that put it at or near the top. For many, only price prevents them from getting the car they “really” want. Hopefully the tech in the Volt and everything it brings will attract enough buyers to overcome the price and any other drawbacks.
