The Chevy Volt show car has always been demonstrated with a white glossy iPod-like center stack console.
Shortly after it was unveiled the GM design team noted the stack would also be available in black and green finishes as well.
I have personally seen the new black stack while touring the Volt IVer production facility, and thought it looked excellent.
In one of GM’s videos showing the Volt IVers being built, one can catch a glimpse of the black stack, captured in the image above.
Although it looks gray in the shot it is indeed black.
I cannot get an official high resolution photo but am told it will be coming next week.

Aug 4th, 2009 (6:37 pm)I like the matte black look, but is it actually shiny with just a bad camera angle?
It’s also hard to tell if there are dimples on the dashboard to make the buttons easier to find by feel–sort of like on the “F” and “J” keys on a computer keyboard.

Aug 4th, 2009 (6:42 pm)I’d like to start off by apologizing to Lyle for hijacking/ninjaing this thread, sorry about this. (Thanks for making up a thread for me without a lot of substance that I could do this on)
I have decided that I will be leaving the GM-Volt ‘commentary community’ I have enjoyed the past two years+ very much and have made many new friends, and learned a lot along the way.
Over the past few months (and with the new forum style) it has become difficult to be the ‘glass half full/realist’ guy (and a distraction to the board I think)…maybe difficult is the wrong word…time consuming then, as I like to respond to everyone who responds to me as the thread progresses along, usually I make each post after a lot of deliberation and hunting down sources/links/quotes (It is no secret I love sources for statements, lol). It seems as though I have developed a certain crowd that I can be sure will follow posts I make, and more often than not…choas seems to ensue, not that it is all bad, but it is a overall distraction I feel to the flow of the site now.
Moreso that that, often my posts (whether you believe them to be factual or not, helpful or a hindrance) now spawn lives of their own…50 comment sidebars that take away from the thread topic (and the site) and what Lyle is trying to accomplish here. I really didn’t come here to be part of a show, or for internet celebrity…I just wanted to be part of the community. (I’m sure Lyle’s opinion is that it is no big deal, and to not worry about it…but I do). I want GM-Volt.com to be the very best that it can be…and I think this is what is best in the long run, and to keep the focus on the goal.
I will continue of course to check into GM-Volt.com too many times a day and follow with interest everything that is going on, but this will be my last as far as commentary goes.
(I do have to still show up to honor some commitments and come back in november 2010 if GM actually starts shipping Volts to showrooms to take the whippings I have coming of course, lol…and I’ll let you know what EV finally gets dealered to me that meets my criteria).
I’d like to personally thank some people that have made my time here interesting and worth ‘wading into the fray’ everyday for. Noel, RB, Neal (NRiley-its all yours now, but remember the number is 4,392…I’m sure you can do it in no time, heeh), Capt Jack, koz, john1701a (I hate your handle, I always type it wrong), Rashiid, Grizzly, Carcus1, Nasaman, Thomb, JEC, Corvette Guy, Jean Charles, Charlie, LauraM, omega, Bill, Paul, Mark, DaveK, DAv8or, Jim I, Metro etc (I know I missed a lot…sorry). Thanks too to those who I have butted heads with from time to time, and made life interesting, DonC (go easy on my BEVs, lol), JonP, Dan, DaveG (even you Michael Robinson…I’ll even say it for you once without the asterisks- hydrogen)
Thanks most of all to Lyle, your the best (truly)…keep it up. (I’ll keep sending you things I think are of interest and pestering you of course).
To all the GM execs who tune in here…your welcome, lol.
…and I’m always around for that pink tie, or personal tours of the facility in Michigan, lol
And for my friend Tagamet/Tag, (its all Yin now), just this one time for you:
LJGTVWOTR!!**************NPNS
Thanks…and have a good one, it has been my honour (note Canadian ‘U’).

Aug 4th, 2009 (6:58 pm)I post items I wish I could withdraw as well statik. I realize it is simply my stupidity and stubbornness that generates these. I try to blame it on the drama of a 2 year program being dispensed drop by drop. And my (perceived) cosmic need to counter balance the trollic posts we often see here.
Your views are good ones. All the way from the return of Lutzonin side panels to the war cries of hazzah. We here at gm volt dot com have been through the life and death of Ricardo Montalban. And the weirdness of seeing Wags drive up in an electric ghetto Cruze mule.
Hope you decide to take a few days off and hop back in. This is what all of us here wish to see happen as well. We still have more than a full year of drama ahead.

Aug 4th, 2009 (8:08 pm)If GM needs to reduce the Volt cost, why even bother w/buttons & dials? Most controls can be integrated into the touchscreen. They would be better off increasing the size of the screen to maybe a 9″ or 10″ touchscreen, and eliminating most (if not all) of the “hardwired” buttons. This would also reduce points of failure. Dont worry about the users too much. People learn where buttons/controls are pretty quick. (ex Iphones/ipods)

Aug 4th, 2009 (9:07 pm)statik, I agree with you that the new format is a bit crazy. However, did you notice how many more comments are being posted?
I see you in the forum section once in a while and that has a much better format to follow. It’s much easier to have a debate (verbal fist fight at times but it’s all good). You can take the time to gather facts and refute other’s arguments. They also go on for much longer (maybe too long at times).
There is also a new technology coming out very soon that I hope Lyle will adopt to this site. It’s called Google Wave. A new way of collaborating on the web. You can check out a video of it and I think you will agree that it offers an amazing opportunity to improve Internet communications. This should be launched by Google later this year.
Finally, why don’t people just leave? They have to say this long goodbye. Is it more like a person calling out for help before they take the bottle of aspirin? I feel your frustration but now you have to go cold turkey and never come back. Of course you can come on over to the forum section because you didn’t write that off, yet.
Perhaps you are starting to realize that the Volt is coming and it’s going to be hard to stop? You don’t want people going over your past posts and showing how wrong you were? Are you chicken? lol. OK, that was a bit of reverse psychology.
Lyle will probably be changing up the format of these comments soon because I think everyone, including me, is confused as to where the next comment will go. People are now just commenting on the first comment in hopes to not fall 300 comments down to the zero-read section.
Lyle, What are your plans? Any changes? Back to the old system (even though the number of comments have jumped)? Google Wave? Your fans want to know.
Soon we will be hitting the 1 year countdown (in only a few months) and things will start to really get going. I expect many more people coming here to find out what this Volt is all about. Should be a very exciting time with all of the different EV and hybrids finally making it to the showroom floor. We all might even be able to buy a real EV (Tesla is more like a dream to most) next year. Imagine that.
So statik, I guess we will see you back here soon enough. You know you are addicted, you know you need that fix. Normal fossil-fuel-burning life is just too boring for you. Your body and mind will go though spastic withdrawal and will beg you to check back in. Some idiot will post something that just itches you the wrong way and you will be compelled to respond. Should you? Can you? Will I look like a loser? All of these thoughts will come rushing in.
Don’t worry about it. Just post when you want and do so guilt free. See you soon.

Aug 4th, 2009 (9:50 pm)First, I’d like to say that I hope there are no personal or health issues that are forcing your decision to leave.
If not, then I am truly stunned by this announcement. If you actually believe that the “Community” is disrupted by your comments, then perhaps we need to ask Lyle to run a Poll – Keep Statik’s comments coming? yes/no.
Sure, I’ll be the first to say I don’t agree with everything you say, however, sometimes you can be quite amuzing. One of the best laughs I got from this site was when Lyle did a video by a gas pump, and your reply was “Yeah, yeah kid, just pump my gas. What do you think you are, a brain surgeon or something?
As the resident motor mouth (and we’ve got the data to back that up), you definately help to keep the dialouge moving. Sometimes the site needs that on a slow day (do you want black, white, or green for your center stack console?).
Whatever direction you chose, I wish you all the best (unless, of course, GM has chosen you to be a Beta tester for the Volt, and as a condition asked that you no longer comment on this site).

If it’s simply a format change that would keep your valuable input, I’ll vote for it (several times like in Chicago). The fact is that we need you. We value you. And that may not always (or even often) be conveyed – kinda like a marriage years after the honeymoon.
My best hope/hypothesis is that it’s time for your actual family to start another kiddo and they you’re just too TIRED to keep posting at your current volume. Kinda kidding there.

I do understand and can clearly see your posts are no-where near as negative as they used to be which probably does not sit well with you… nothing left to fight or argue over as the car seems to be real now, bankruptcy was far too quick over your predictions, and to add insult to injury even executives at GM are saying you’re the type of people they need to hear from…
Truth be told, much of what you said I actually thought was correct, and I was simply waiting for the opportunity for you to slip up and argue against you. I’ve even written a couple of replies but not posted them after thinking… damn, he’s actually got a point! Bastard!

I appreciate the rational perspective that you have brought to this forum. As others have stated, I hope that at some point you decide to “unretire” …

Aug 5th, 2009 (12:21 am)Sorry to say, but I agree with Lurtz. The consol looks cluttered with little dimples and buttons that are simply pictographs. I will say though that I’m sure a lot of thought went into this design, but it is perhaps not what I would expect. I’m not yet convinced it is practical as it appears you would have to reach over pretty far to get to some of the controls, and what happens when the icons rub off – I’m sure there was a button here at one point!
I hope to be proven wrong.

I find more often than not that I share his frequently but not always bleak opinion on the state of EVs. I’ve learned a lot from you man. There’s no use trying to change your mind. Given the time you have spent here I’m sure this decision wasn’t reached lightly. Instead I thank you for your insight and humor. By now you must know you’ll be missed terribly. For what it’s worth, after each post your comments were the highlight of my day. Thanks again, see you around the next major milestone (hopefully to keep it in perspective).

Aug 5th, 2009 (12:37 am)From Autobloggreen “When the “production” Volt design was unveiled last September, the center stack was finished in very iPod-esque white plastic with touch sensitive controls. The IVER prototype shown in the video has a dark grey finish which we haven’t seen before in a Volt.”
We’ve known this for quite a while here, we’ve also seen it was black not gray (though that can change like anything else)…Thank you Lyle, again more proof that the information here is generally further ahead and more complete than anywhere else!!!

Aug 5th, 2009 (12:54 am)“Pink Ghetto” – the term comes from the integration of more women in a traditionally male workplace, where women were/are given the less desirable tasks from which there is low likelihood of advancement.
It’s not that women are less capable, but if the people in charge don’t respect the task by assigning to that task those they have the lowest expectations of, those people won’t be given the budget, responsibility or creative freedom to do an excellent job.

So you will be joining the ranks of us lurkers, for a while at least. I have trouble believing someone with your insight can keep quiet for long. You are the consumate professor – He who understands and feels a need to spread knowledge.
I must say that the whole GM-volt community seems to have grown in our collective understanding of the the automotive industry and the technological shift that is happeninig before our eyes. I tell my kids that the family vehicles they are learning to drive, (one an automatic trans 454 suburban and the other a standard trans four banger), will seem like steam engine vehicles by the time they are ready to buy their first car.
To all who visit this site I toast you for appreciating this moment in time when fossil fuel becomes an option rather than a staple part of the global economy.
Call me silly but I actually get goose bumps when I see that video of the volt IVER coming together with that musical score. Good things will come of the work being done. And I have a strong feeling better times are just ahead.
Sage Statik I solute you from the very western edge of this great country we share. Yes, colour me Canadian.
Take care.

Aug 5th, 2009 (6:15 am)This is a tough news to get, Statik. I don’t think I can say anything that’s not already been said, but I’ll throw my two cents in.
Without your tireless policing of our plebeian responses, we would certainly be a much more vapid community. We would be little more than a choir preaching to itself, and could have degraded long ago to irrelevant banter on each and every thread. You offer counterpoints where none else dare, always on-topic, and always with enough intellectual punch to stir the pot past a one-post reply. Everyone reads when you post, and everyone learns.
You keep us HONEST. You keep us GROUNDED. You make Lyle’s site MEANINGFUL and something the GM team can dive into for more than just outlandish fanboy ideas and critiques. You have given gm-volt.com a taste of the good stuff, and though we may never find a replacement able to fire up relevant debate as well as you, we will soon know the hurt of being without it.
Take this to heart if you’ve managed to read past Tag’s reply : there are thousands of people out there that will miss you and hope for your un-retirement, be it a day, month, or year from now.
Take care, Sergeant Major.

Aug 5th, 2009 (6:21 am)In the realm of human (not engineers) interface design, it appears that this console will be the death of many due to the distractions caused by fiddling with the knobs and buttons while operating the vehicle. Throw this array on top of a cell phone conversation and bam, lives lost for the sake of gadgets!
Also, the eyes of 20 – 40 year old drives can see small things; however, those with multi-focal length glasses have to point the nose and tilt the head to get the correct focus on the dashboard. This takes time which leads to unsafe driving practices.
Here’s an idea, they should make interior car designer where some type of optics which distorts their vision to emulate the older customer base and run them through some sort of safety analysis while operating the vehicle.

Aug 5th, 2009 (7:05 am)As one who has “butted heads” with statik a few times, I can say that he does stick to his beliefs whether or not we like them. And for that, I give him a lot of credit. I still think he is wrong on alot of things, but that is something we can discuss in person at a Volt Nation gathering sometime when we are all showing off our cars!
I have to say that I have often wondered what else he does during the day and night, with the amount of posts he was making here!
Personally, I don’t think he will be able to stay away. I think he will change his name and post now and then. Here is a name you can think about using: LutzBuddy or maybe PinkTieGuy
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
As to the new format, I have to say that I do not like it. Like nasaman, I have not been posting as much, simply because I do not have the time to look over each posting again and again to see what is new. But that is JMHO.

There have been times when the community had too much optimism and it tends to go into a dreamland. Your posts at those times have been the only ones to bring everyone back to the ground and face the reality – which I have liked the most.
We’ll miss you big time and hope you choose to come back sometime.
In the meantime, take care and stay well.

Aug 5th, 2009 (11:15 am)I do not think Statik was looking for anything except an opportunity to let us know he would not be posting here anymore, except on rare occasions. If he had just stopped it would have cause a lot of wondering just what happened to him. He did it the right way. The responses to his post proves once again that he is well respected on the site and that we all will miss him. I just hope that some of us can step up and replace just a part of his contributions to our daily blog. I know I can never come close to what Statik gave us. I will not even try. His contribution was on a much grander scale than mine could ever be. He did not ask for any pat on the back, nor was it implied by his post. The pats on the back he has received because of his “final” post are ones he greatly deserved.

As a casual GM-Volt.com visitor and contributor I must also pile on here and let you know how much your comments and your insights will be sorely missed.
I too was a “Find (on this page)” …’statik’…user and for someone who lost an appreciable level of interest when the production Volt desgin came out…it was you sir… who kept me coming back (Lyle of course you too but that is understood). I mean to this day, I still use the term ‘Nerd Shoes’ whenever someone is talking about the prius! …simply classic.

So here we are a little over a year left (give or take a year…he he) and you decide to quit…please don’t pull a Sarah Palin on us!!!
While I feel as though her quitting on the state of Alaska WILL actually help them…I do NOT think the GM-Volt.com community will be aided by your refusal to comment, in fact, I feel just the opposite this site just got a whole lot less interesting…..
Even so….I wish you well and look forward to your inevitable commentary come November 2010.

Aug 5th, 2009 (5:25 pm)Talk about hijacking, LOL! This is probably the largest number of replies to a comment in the history of GM-Volt.com, a record which will quite likely stand forever.
Burnout is real, and sometimes it really is better to just walk away. Sometimes new people just have to pick up the baton. I’ve quit here a few times myself, LMAO. But I always think of Michael Corleone, “Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.”
I’m not crazy about the new format either, and I have slowed way down in the number of comments I make the last few months. It does get pretty exhausting to try to keep up with all of the comments. So maybe one approach might be to do that – just slow down. Or maybe a simple “hi” once in awhile. You could always use an alias if you’re embarrassed about relapsing, hehehe.
Anyway, i always think about Jean-Charles (who has slowed down a bit as well, I think) and his brilliant comment about the growth of online communities. It is truly amazing that you actually can make meaningful friendships in this kind of a forum, with people you may never see, and whose real names you may never know.
Best of luck in everything you do, my good friend. Every good wish.

An off white with threads of black and silver marbling will bring the console to life. The side benefit is hiding fingerprints.
