What right are you referring to? The right to have to go into bankruptcy because of huge medical bills? The right to lose your home as thousands of elderly people do? The right to have to choose between taking your medicine and eating?

I'll do without those rights thank you very much.

I think that if gas went back up to $4 per gal. then the Volt would hit the market immediately and at a high price. I wonder if this is not what they are waiting for?

Why didn't I think of it!!! With the right electronics, an electric car could charge using ambiant magnetic fields (buried or overhead power lines and very easily if the powerlines are high-voltage)... FOR FREE!!! Undetectable and untraceable. All you need is a coil (preferably multi-directional) a surge protector and an AC->DC converter. It may not be enough to be perpetual but it would certainly extend your range.
If you think it's impossible, A man living near high-voltage lines once buit himself such a device for his house. The power company had him dismantle it and now provides him electricity free of charge for life, in exchange for his silence...
