Interesting how Jon Lauckner mentions San Francisco.

Yes, the city has very much adopted electric and bio diesel transportation. Several EV conversion shops doing business there as well.

Visited San Fran this past week and rode 80% electric ~ 20% bio diesel. Total cost for four days was about $38. These included: BART, cable car, trolley, and bio diesel bus. Saw many Prius taxi cabs. No worries about battery overheating. There's a consistent wind chill coming off the bay.

Of course GM wants all their vehicles to be great "Hits" with the public however, trying new and innovative things presents a risk that can be very profitable or, not. You give it your best and I mean your best effort and then, you make your vehicle.

Quit setting around questioning your actions all of the time. The new GM is sounding very weak. Keep on with the VOLT project and get some copies of the vehicle out in the public and sell the damn car. This internet crap is for the kiddy section, make the new GM work.

The public didn't ruin Ford, Chrysler and GM, GM did. So you get to work and stay focused and this subject is on the VOLTEC issue. Stay focused.

Then were does the new oil come from?

The basic peak oil argument is simple:
1. There's a finite amount of oil on earth.
2. We're not making a significant amount of it, as viewd from the timeframe of human civilization.
3. Humans on earth are extracting and using something like one cubic mile of oil per year, which is a significant amount of the world's supply.

Can you point out a flaw in this line of reasoning? I can't, but I sure can quibble over the details. For instance, there's no guarantee that the peak will happen in my lifetime. Or maybe it happened in 2005, and we just haven't felt the full squeeze yet.

If you're a young earth creationist, then you can easily dismiss all of this as nonsensical. That's fine with me, and we can stop talking about this -- I've discussions involving geologic timescales with young-earth creationists before, and I'm pretty sure we won't get each other's perspective.

Now, assuming that you're comfortable thinking about geological timescales, I'd like to hear what you think about the following question: If there's no such thing as peak oil, what is the source of new oil to replace what we've burned in our lifetimes?

Also, even if peak oil doesn't exist, what happens as billions of Indian and Chinese people work their way into modern lifestyles? Even if oil production were to continue to grow, what are the implications of splitting the existing oil production between a couple of billion more people?

I've given these issues a lot of thought... There are lots of things I don't know, and I can't pretend to know what the future holds. But it does seem like paying off the last of my unsecured debt and making household-efficiency a priority are good moves for every future.

dorp7,

I don't think I made it up. I seem to remember that saying from when I was very young (1950's). I don't know what it is based on or even if I have it completely correct. I seem to remember hearing it from time to time when someone was indicating doing something useless or wishful. I guess it means that if you whistle down a well the sound goes down and is drowned out and no one really gets to hear your whistle. Not quite like whistling up a well where the sound would travel up to the top and out.
