There is none currently, but there will be and they will be much more suited than the Volt. It does not take as much to re engineer a MG to a EREV or EV than it does to make a totally new car! The Volt might have a "Prius Effect" and that could be the thing that saves it. But the Volt will be a small seller. Also competition could mean other GM Cars like the Aveo EREV could beat the Volt. A set up like Chrysler's ENVI I think is the best option for GM

My guess is Buick will get the first hybrid because Cadillac will already have two engines for the same vehicle segment. Chevy won't because it has the high mileage Equinox 4-banger and Chevy customers are more cost conscious.

That sounds like the Zenn NEV:
http://www.zenncars.com/
It's been around for years.

The problem is that it's governed to 25mph, and it isn't legal to drive it on a road with a speed limit higher than 35mph in most places.

We agree.

LauraM said:
"The oil companies make a lot more money when oil prices are higher."

Yep, I noted that with increased EV adoption subsidizing inefficient vehicles longer than otherwise (through initially lower gasoline prices) in my earlier comment:
"Of course, with longer use of fuel inefficient vehicles than otherwise, demand for gasoline is higher than otherwise and the price higher than otherwise with greater profits for oil companies. All thanks to EVs."

We're going to see lots of see-sawing of the gasoline price equilibrium through this reapeated interactive process, with long term continued growth of electric drive application adoption in vehicles absolutely speeding freight train inevitable. And freight trains are mostly electric drive diesel hybrids.

Of course, what'll ultimately speed electric drive adoption is the instrinsic luxury performance, superior quiet, maximum torque off the line, linear up to about half the maximum speed and near linear instant acceleration available at all times, not fuel savings. The former requires getting them into the hand of the retail owning public, 'cause once they feel performance electric drive in their owned vehicle, they'll never go back to a full gasser. It's ironic that operating cost frugality is a major part of what sold the initial adoption in personal vehicles of what is ultimately also going to be a huge performance and ride quality booster, electric drive.

The Volt throws the oil companies both short term and long term bones, as it uses gas.

If I understand the situation the reason lithium batteries are so expensive is largely to do with the manufacturing process rather than materials costs, much of the process is not automated making the manufacturing much more expensive. I'm not sure if this is the whole store or not.

And the "cause" of this negative speculation is GM's failure to reveal the size of the IVER gas tank. :)

Just in case GM officials are reading this, it'd be great to have the manual pre-screened for things such as readability level prior to it's release (they probably already do this, but being in educational psy for a lot of my professional years, I'd love to volunteer - and I'm VERY good with confidentiality). Manuals are generally aimed at about a 4th grade reading level (there are several formulas used to assess this).
Be well,
Tagamet
