Do it!!
I'm a true to the core "Buy American" advocate. My loyalty to GM and Ford will be completely revived if reliable and light weight electric/ hybrid electric cars start rolling off assembly lines.
99% of the time, I don't drive more than 90 miles in one day.

Question: Why are these 'green' cars still being built with steel frames and bodies? I would think weight reduction would be a top priority in vastly increasing mileage/charge. Where is Chevy's carbon fiber frame? Is it too expensive?

#8 Jim

As to your third point, there is a business model in place to basically "lease" the battery packs. What you would do is drive your car like normal. If ti runs low, and you have an outlet nearby, you plug it in. If not, you find a "battery station".

The concept is like a fuel station for batteries. The station is planned to look like a car wash: you drive in the same way, and, as your car is pulled forward automatically, robot arms switch battery packs for you. The new pack is fully charged - making it as quick to recharge as to refuel!

The company that is doing this now in places like Israel, Iceland, and Hawaii, is called Better Place. You can find out more at http://www.betterplace.com

meanwhile other manufacturers are producing results...

In the next few weeks, 450 consumers in California, New York and New Jersey will begin picking up fully electric Mini coupes, charging them at home and using them as their daily commuters for the next year.

188 Adrian and 221 Mark Z
Suburbs? Haha. Who would drive it? Not soccer Moms. I wouldn’t want to be hit by it by a truck.

That's why THIS will be my next vehicle (the yellow one, not the white one):

Just love this Idea.
The EV1 was too expencive to sell, so it was leased. This is an afordable EV, perfect for the back and forth commute from the subs to the city.
GM should experiment with large Taxi cab/ Limo sized cars. Imagine a Hummer or even a Chevy branded pure taxi with 1958 Checker styling monopolising the city spaces accross north america and spreading the GM/enviro message; testing and pushing the technology envelope. Allso how about a EV Limo on the same chassis as the Checker Cab, but with 1996 Fleetwood styling, finally a Cadillac worthy of the Hollywood Elite, these Limo's would be seen at all the red carpet award ceremonies and would be televised "maybee even lauded" free of charge to GM.

Wow, some of you left your brain at home. Until some better process (ultracaps) comes along a pure electric is a waste. Period. It cost more of Gores carbon credits to build the thing, run the thing, and buy a second car because of range anxiety.

Stick to what you know, the Volt design will work for everybody. Everything else is an overpriced golf cart.

I drove to the lake today, 115 miles there and back. The rest of the week I drive a max of 35 miles per day. Should I get a second car just for that one day at the lake? It would be a waste of resources. Think people....THINK.

I commuted to downtown Manhattan fro half a year once. It was a relatively unique commute . 1)
drive my personal car 35 miles to National DC airport, 2) Catch the NY Shuttle to La Guardia;. #) Taxi in to lower Manhattan World Trade Center. Elevator commute to 97th floor. At night reverse. The overall commute was about 1.5 to 2.25 hours. Biggest variable was th 10-20 minute World Trade Center elevator semi-commute.

Interestingly enough the "native" New Yorkers frequently had longer time commutes to mid NJ counties, and were doing it for years on end.

#236 NZDavid:

Yeah, me too. We took our vintage race cars to Reno last weekend. By the time we get home and put everything away, it is so exhausting that it takes about a week to recover.

We got a 1st place finish with our 58 Corvette though, so that makes it all more than worthwhile!

#3 Jin in PA:

I agree. I have a 25 mile commute each way, and can plug in at work. I could make this work. When oil hits $100/barrel, as a credible looking study posted on a recent thread predicted, these thing will start to look really good.

Bring it on GM. Get ahead of the curve for once.
