On 9/16/2008 at 8:30 AM EST the player below will display GMs special LIVE global webcast. I will be right there at GM Global Headquarters in Detroit Michigan as the broadcast is taking place, and will get a firsthand account of this monumental moment in automotive history.
Other key events of the day including the possibility for live online chats with GM execs can be found here .
We expect the Chevy Volt will be revealed at this time, as well as “some other surprises.” The video will be available here afterwards for replay.

I think GM should hire Mazda’s designers next time they make a car… no pun intended, hehehe…
it is a huge step towards the future of cars, however, something that is so revolutionary deserves an in your face look as well
imagine something that looks as intrinsically bad ass as FIURA with an E-rev system?
wait didn’t toyota make a car concept named VOLT also?

Alright GM ! ! ! It’s about time you guys did something about our dependence on oil…foreign or domestic. Maybe you can teach Toyota something for a change. I’m on your list and can’t wait to be cruising through the streets and freeways of Southern California with an Ameican Made plug-in hybrid. Are you sure you can’t get the production car ready by 2009? I’ll be glued to to my laptop screen on September 16th
September 15th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
I don’t post much here, but I wanted to for sure say thanks Lyle for the time you commit to this cause. I can’t imagine how much of your personal time you must devote to this site and this cause.
Thanks!

Remember, if you push something hard enough, it will fall over!
September 15th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
This vehicle must succeed. Let’s face it if you’re the oil industry you’ve got to be pro-Prius, pro-Hybrid. This is because people can purchase these cars and no matter how good they feel, or even how good the press feels, they’ll always be dependent on oil. The Volt will shatter this not only because of the first 40, but because just as importantly of the E-85 capability of the R.E. ICE!

It’s a shame that there is all this turmoil on Wall Street this week. GM could get a LOT of good coverage of their Centennial celebration on TV networks like CNBC and Fox Business. I think the TV networks ought to cover it a lot anyway. People are probably tired of hearing about all the negative news on Wall Street as it is.
GM unveiling the Volt today might get some OPTIMISM going on Wall Street that we need. These problems on Wall Street will pass in a few weeks, but E-Flex cars like the Volt will be helping America and the rest of the world prosper for a LONG time.

Lutz–”Volt is a example of GM global prowess in design”
September 16th, 2008 at 8:01 am
I think GM hiring Bob Lutz was one of the best decisions they’ve ever made. He makes things happen. I like what he just said about having excellent car designs being the STARTING point for new cars. It’s not easy to start with a chassis and powertrain and then simply add a wrapper to it.

Lyle, thank you for the link. The presention was interesting and the Volt looks better than I expected.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Alright, I will say it, it looks really nice when looked at from all angles unobstructed. I would be happy to own this.
Bit disappointed I waited an hour for 60 seconds of footage, but at least I got to see it. Would have loved a look at the interior, and more.
We spent more time seeing dirtbag dubai then the Volt.
Oh well, here’s hoping to a flurry of full production photos soon.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:41 am
The production VOLT roll out looked bright and shiny! At last we got to see that stunning roof. Looking forward to closeup photos of the interior. Thanks GM and happy 100th anniversary!
September 16th, 2008 at 8:42 am
I think most of it is ok, but really not too sure about the roof. The grill still needs blackout for the recesses.
They seem to be doing fairly good in the rest of the world, but the cars seem to be more appropriate for each of the regions than we are getting here. Wonder why that is?
September 16th, 2008 at 8:43 am
This car looks great… the view from the back is the best…
For once we were able to get a clear side view and I like the lines…
This is a good balance car and I won’t feel geeky ryding around in it.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Long lead into the VOLT, but I really like the lines - especially the sheet metal lines flowing from the front wheel wells.
Terrible lighting for a HUGE product intro like this - someone at GM was not thinking…

Well, they kept the ‘zig’ I liked from the front wheels back.
Waiting on Lyle to tell us what the heck that black roof is made out of!
September 16th, 2008 at 8:48 am
You know what, I think Lyle and GM were right about those leaked pictures. I think the car they just showed DOES look better. It looks pretty good. I think it just needed some finishing touches added to it. There’s ways you can make plain looking cars look more sporty. Just look at all those shops in California who do modifications of production cars for people. I’m starting to feel pretty good about the Volt rollout when it happens in late 2010. Who knows, the exterior designers might even add a few more tweaks to the exterior design to make it look even better.
Way to go Volt design team! You’ve done a good job. We appreciate all your hard work. I’m looking forward to test driving the Volt in 2010. I’m going to go see it in person at an auto show soon. Maybe the interior is close to being in final production form.

It’s not ugly.
Could’ve lived without the 63 minute pep rally for the GM employees that could’ve/should’ve been kept in-house.
Actually, it’s a lot better looking than the Prius. It’s not striking like the concept, but considering what had to be accomplished, it ain’t bad lookin’.
Still choking on the price tag.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:52 am

The Volt looked great. I particulary like the rear 3/4 view and the blacked-out roof. It looks very sleek. I can’t wait to get mine.

Does anyone want to buy my ‘65 GTO so I can put the money away for a down payment?
I’ve been pretty bummed for the last few weeks but I think the Volt is awesome. At least from the outside. Now let’s see the interior. Wheels didn’t look to small. I like the top. Didn’t get a long enough look at it though. Let’s get some real pics out there now.
Happy 100th Birthday GM!
September 16th, 2008 at 8:56 am
I only got to see the end when Bob drove the Volt out but oh man is that a great looking car. Do I still like the concept better, yes but the production version is a looker.

I think this is awesome the time frame they took to release this sort of vehicle is just incredible from the battery testing to the crash tests and wind tunnel aspects.
Im just very excited to see this be on the road. And next in line the hydrogen vehicle. 2010 seems like its the banner year for alot of new and exciting things.

I’m in Belgium not in Mexico and I own one of those Corsas. In urban traffic, they are fantastic and cool on gas even if you treat them “dynamically”.

I saw Bob lock the keys in too (lol). He should have worn the pink tie!
Personally, I DO think that the “leaked”pics didn’t do the car justice. I like the cut side panels and the tail to front tinted roof. Surely Lyle will post pics of the interior (once they use On-Star to unlock the car).
That setting was darn impressive. I’ll bet he’s still grinning.

Major troll? I’m just laughing at GM’s apparent struggle in the US markets because of their poor vision. I’m happy to see the Volt going somewhere, but I would have taken the concept version at the 35 miles AER.
However, it was kind of funny that an American company was touting every other nation in the world instead of the US, where they BEGAN. It’s like a big middle finger to all who support them.

At 12 MPG, 43 mile round trip commute, and Over $4.00 for premium gas I’m not kidding. I’m not sure I can pull the trigger though.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:06 am
I can definitely picture myself crusing through gas stations running on electric.

Another interesting tidbit from the press release - the 40 mile AER is based on the EPA city cycle, not highway mileage.

I’m in Belgium not in Mexico and I own one of those Corsas. In urban traffic, they are fantastic and cool on gas even if you treat them “dynamically”.
If you come one day, i’ll let you try.

JC

Oh, I know, they are everywhere…but here Must have seen it a dozen times in that PR hour.
Might be a little while before I’m in Belgium though…but thanks for the offer, hehe.

Brent @ #114,
Looks like they have some exterior & interior images up on that link now… Thanks!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Photos are up on GM’s site now.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:13 am
She looks great! Now they really have to produce this car. GM would face a hellish backlash if they pulled out now. I can’t wait to see her in showrooms. Imagine being able to buy a high volume electric car!
What’s more is that this will be the poorest performing one! They will only get better as the years pass with more range and less expensive battery packs. Should make the next 10 years of oil problems livable.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:13 am
I really do like the final version…now let’s see it on the road!
I’d like GM to take Lyle’s list and honor it please!

The pictures aren’t available on GM’s site yet, but here is the official press release:
http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet?target=http://image.emerald.gm.com/gmnews/viewpressreldetail.do?domain=2&docid=48589
———-
Thanks, hadn’t seen that yet!
Here it is again…and in the official press release no less:
“The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility, subject to GM successfully negotiating satisfactory government incentives”
I wonder just what exactly GM wants that it still doesn’t have, other than machinery subsidies, pay no taxes and get a gov’t bailout loan for 30% of the value of the investment?

You can watch the video of the unveiling again at Noon Eastern on the gmnext.com website.

It DOES look better than those leaked photos. They put some nice finishing touches on it. It looks good in silver. That’s probably the color I’ll get. I like that silver and black two-tone look. The top of the Volt looks pretty cool and futuristic.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:20 am
One thing I hope is that GM at least considers this list for slaes of the Volt… As a long time fan… I want one..
Metal Flake Black with all the options…
# 974 on list…. Central Alberta Canada… Great proving grounds for the Volt..
GM…. Are you listening.?

I particularly like this part: “E-REV competitors: …none”
This is where the real value is. Hopefully it won’t be none for long but if GM didn’t take this leap of faith, how much longer than 2010 would we have had to wait?
I’m no GM fanboy but just as they deserve the blame for past mistakes, they deserve a lot of credit for getting this ball rolling. They will have earned even more when they follow through in late 2010.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:28 am
It stinks. My flash player froze up just as the volt was rolling out and now the video wont restart. It did it twice before during the broadcast and I was able to get it going again. Now I dont get to see what happend after the Volt stoped on the turntable

You can thank Bob Lutz a lot for getting the Volt built. Good thing he had “batteries on the brain” because of his past job at a battery company when he first came onboard at GM!
He might be a legend in the car business for the next 100 years because of his efforts to turn GM around the past few years. They might be talking about Bob at the GM 200 year celebration in 2108.

Lots of stuff from GM Next being dumped onto youtube now, an interesting aerodynamics behind the scenes video. They claim 30% decrease in drag of the production vs concept, and that drag accounts for 20% of the power used by a vehicle. So we have a dumpier car for the sake of ~2.6 miles of electric range!!!
That also means a brick (aka a Jeep) would have 32mi electric range.
I am now waiting for a 30mi E-REV Jeep

Looking to buy the Volt when it comes out and trade-in my Toyota Prius. It appears that GM has done everything well for the Volt:
Dark lower sides and underbody which should eliminate rocks and road dirt from showing up
1) Four door sedan (hatchback?)
2) Generally aerodynamic
3) Shaded Instrument panel, 2 cup holders, Keyless ignition, Bluetooth (standard),
4) Optional navigation system with onboard hard drive for maps and music storage
5) Well designed seats (stiching should not cut into vinyl with years of use
6) Glass rear hatchback allowing viewing from the rear (will a backup camera be available also?)
7) Rear spoiler which should provide an added attribute blocking headlights from cars in the rear getting into your eyes while driving or in bumper to bumper traffic
Overall very well concieved and executed!
Hoping: that the sound insulation is robust, the ride is smooth/tight, Options a-plenty (Navigation, HiFi/Satellite Radio Sound System, On Star, Solar Roof, Extended Warranty, possibly a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) version, off market accessories, etc.)

I was quite surprised how much better it looked than the leaked photos. It is really a very cool looking car.
Not like the concept Volt, but hey, this is a car for the masses. Grannies and soccer moms and Joe Sixpack. Not everybody wants an electric Batmobile.
(I admit that I do.)
This week I had an opportunity to take a close look at a new Malibu, really for the first time. At that time I said to myself, “If GM is only able to make the Volt look this good, that will be enough.” I think they did it.
I guess what I am feeling right now is a bit of relief and some new excitement.
This car is a game-changer for GM and for the US auto industry. Maybe even the US in general. For most people in the coming years, using only about 5% the gas you use to use is going to be a HUGE benefit.
Way to go GM!
September 16th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
It would seem most of the comments here were written by GM PR people or those owning GM stock. “Grannies and soccer moms and Joe Sixpacks” are not going to drive a $40,000 car that seats 4. At that price, this is NOT a car for the masses. And after all the hype of the past year, the styling is a huge disappointment. Instead of delivering the exciting beauty of the concept Chevrolet, you’ve given us…..well…..another Chevy. That car, at that price, does not bode well for the next ten years at GM, and at that rate i can’t imagine another one hundred. It’s sad, very sad.

For all youi anti-American self-loathing haters. You have a simple choice that if you were in charge, you would not allow others to have.
Simply, Don’t buy one! (And get the hell out of the line.)
You can go sign up and register some more cemetery headstones. Just like your anti-American, self-loathing hero used to do, as a “Chicago-machine Community Organizer”.
Remember… Vote Early. And Vote Often.

I really, really like the production design. I think it’s going to be a killer product, as long as the quality is comparable with a Prius. Quality in the production manufacture of the vehicle is GM’s biggest hurdle, now.
Unfortunately, GM has a storied history of putting out a poor quality product on big projects like this one. I’m still traumatized by their first forays into fuel efficient cars in the 1980’s. I can’t forget the torque wrench left in the flywheel of my father’s car in 1983. Of course, the GM dealers didn’t “find” the real problem until the warranty ran out and, then, wanted to charge us $5000, in 1983 dollars, to remove the GM assembly line torque wrench.
My entire family has bought Fords and Toyotas for 25 years because of that incident. That’s about 10 cars GM lost to the competition over a wrench, then trying to cover up the real problem.
Today’s Chevy Colbat is OK, but it just doesn’t compare with a Japanese car in quality. GM (and the UAW) need to realize that the entire future of the company evolves around this car. If they put out a poorly assembled product after all the hype, the company is finished.
The original concept car, while cool, looked too much like an electric commuter vehicle. The production Volt looks like something very practical, yet very stylish.
If the Volt can bring electric propulsion to Middle America, it will be a huge victory for GM and the environment.
Clearly, the design of this car is awesome. If GM can keep its focus on quality, sign me up.
September 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
The car is more expensive, but $40K might not be bad if you consider the expenses you could eliminate.
Electric motors are less complex than gas engines. Since you would only use the internal combustion engine (ICE) during long trips, I can’t imagine the ICE needing much recurring maintenance. Plus, since the ICE is only generating electricity, the engine is not experiencing as much wear as one directly connected to a drive shaft. Additionally, the ICE doesn’t need to be complex to run at the constant RPM/load level required to turn a generator.
GM has to carefully weigh the maintenance and operation costs to make this vehicle worth its price. This platform is a revolutionary jump in automotive technology that will be eventually used in other vehicle models. GM is going to have to live with the Volt platform for a long time; they’d better do it right.
If the ongoing maintenance and operations costs are significantly lower, I don’t mind paying GM and the UAW workers a few thousand extra bucks on the initial purchase.. I don’t like paying OPEC; OPEC is pure evil.
When you buy OPEC products, you might as well write a check directly to Al-Qaeda.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
“The car is more expensive, but $40K might not be bad if you consider the expenses you could eliminate.” Not bad??? What about the expense of replacing the batteries in a few years? I don’t like paying $ 4.00+/gal for gas either but I don’t see a $40K + car helping the general public stop our dependency on foreign oil. The price tag is way too high unless your part of John McCain’s “middle class”.

Holy crap that was unbearable to watch. Pick a freakin language and stick with it. I stopped watching about 20 min in to it.
I really don’t want to have negative things to say but sheesh, that was like watching a bad Ronco infomercial. I realize GM is a global company but perhaps there should have been several smaller celebrations targeted to more focused populations rather than risking alienating americans.
Or hell, maybe it’s just me.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:53 am
Lyle,
Did you happen to notice the marketing director’s expression when she mentioned the internet?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Well, let’s face it, it’s not the concept car which was much more edgy and projected the image of “I’ve got good taste, moving ahead into the future, successful, and I know you wish you had one of these”. Now it’s more like “I’m just an average person and willing to settle for an average looking car rather than project success, so that I can save some money.” I wanted one before, but now, it’s just not hot enough. You have to project success in business based upon everything you surround yourself with. The final design does not project the image that the concept car did. Why do we all have to be like drones driving to work in the same car? Come on GM; push out those wheel wells and make me excited again!

#139 Jim.
From #138 Mikeinatl.
I do not work for GM or own any GM stock. In previous threads I have said things like, “There is not one car in the current GM line that I would like to own.”
In #138, I was simply stating my opinion that the production Volt was watered down to have a more universal appeal. It also had to meet some pretty stringent wind drag parameters.
But relax. Once the first Volt hits the street, GM will build many more versions on that platform, perhaps even one that looks like the Concept Volt, my personal favorite. That is what they have always done. Coupe deVilles, Impalas, Corvettes, Saturns, Suburbans and on and on.
This isn’t the end. This isn’t even the beginning yet.
September 19th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
too bad it wouldn’t go 80 or 100 miles on a charge then I could go to work with all electric!
