GM Showing McCain Production Version of Chevy Volt

July 18th, 2008 | Posted in: Design

At the time of this writing Senator John McCain, presumptive Republican presidential candidate is gettign the VIP tour of the Chevy Volt in GM’s Warren Technical Center.

As per the Detroit Press, he will be seeing the production version. From the article:

“Before the meeting with GM employees, McCain will get a VIP overview of the upcoming Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle from GM Chairman Rick Wagoner, Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and other executives — including a look at the production version that hasn’t been publicly revealed.”

Regardless of one’s political affiliation, it is remarkably important how aware the next president will be about the importance of electric cars and in particular, aware of the Chevy Volt.

Even though it looks different from the concept, sign me up for one! It means I won’t be buying ANY MORE GAS!

Check out the following plan to get America off foreign oil by oil billionare T. Boone Pickens. He wants to implement his plan within the next 10 years.

Harness the wind and solar to generate electricity for the VOLT!

I agree Lyle. It is remarkably important for the next president to be aware of the importance of electric cars and in particular, aware of the Chevy Volt. And to push for tax breaks for the consumers to buy it.
I pay way too much in taxes, and would love to get some of that back to buy the Volt.

Am I missing something here? T. Boone wants to use wind power but from what I’ve heard, they will kill birds by the thousands. I have not heard anything about this on this site but by looking at them I don’t see how a red tailed hawk or golden eagle could get through. Also don’t you need about a 30 mph wind to run one. Like that’s going to happen on a constant basis. Also doesn’t it increase the price of electricity by about 50 percent? I would really like to know these things.

Obama vs. McCain. Can you say “pandering”?

Both the Democratic-Socialists/Progressives/Liberals (Obama) and New-Conservatives (McCain) HATE the limitations placed on them by the US Constitution’s Bill of Rights (especially that nasty 10th one) AND they hate the fact that our Rights are natural (from our creator) and inalienable (not unalienable).

These evil traitors want unlimited power! They also want ignorant people to exchange their natural rights for government Privileges! They ignore the Constitutional limits on government power by “Interpreting” instead of OBEYING the supreme law so they can discard our individual rights and freedoms for state privileges. What the state can give, the state can take away. Ever read the un-Patriot Act?

The fact is that History repeats and that is why the Constitution was written to LIMIT central government power. What is not specifically allowed goes to the States or to the People. Read the 10th Amendment! The 1st and 2nd Amendments exist as the People’s last defense when the Government comes to steal the rest of their natural rights & freedoms as they are now doing in the name of “defending the homeland”. Isn’t that what Hitler said just before the concentration camps went into business.

    Keep your powder dry.

Revolutionary E-flex powertrain AND an all around nice looking car that people will be clamoring to buy in 2010.

I think the candidates should bring some visibility to this new technology among the american people. To use their position to just let people know electric vehicles are the future. This will encourage more rapid adoption. But please don’t subsidize. I don’t respect people who should do things for themselves but instead are stuck on the govt or parents. And I don’t respect industries that mooch of the taxpayers either.

Yes, wind turbine generators kill birds by the thousands, and cats, rats, etc. kill them by the 10’s of millions. Tall office buildings, as do cars, kill birds by the thousands as well.

With regards to wind speed, the faster the wind the more power. However they will start generating power from 4 meters/second and attain full power about 9 meters/second. At 25-30 meters/second they can no longer operate and will shut down. In general in the USA they generate the equivalent of full power about 25 – 30% of the time.

In NZ we get 40 – 47% full power equivalent production.

McCain gets to see the production version before Lyle? Just doesn’t seem right. to me.

    http://blog.indecision2008.com/2008/05/06/jon-stewart-barack-and-hillary-open-the-panderers-box/#comments

OK, so we’re in debt up to our eyeballs. The dollar is collapsing and so is the economy. Our freedoms and privacy is being stripped in the name of “homeland security”. The rest of the world hates us because we attack first and ask questions later and we’re willing to bail out any bumbling FOR PROFIT corporation using taxpayer DEBT.

How much is it going to cost us to bail out GM because they decided that Hummer was a better corporate decision than the EV-1? How much MORE are we going to debase our currency to get this deal done? Does Congress REALLY think that the money in the magic hat with the little white bunny is endless and without cost?

I want the Volt too, but I want to buy one for myself, not for Congress to use my tax money, debt or to devalue my savings to buy one for some stranger.

American WAS about capitalism’s risk and reward. But now that there is no corporate risk, there can be no reward for those who are forced to bear the Burdon of public debt.

If you are an optimist, you can believe that the candidates are learning from GM and other leaders of clean energy, so that they can create good policy. If you are a cynic, then you believe this is merely a photo op to give candidates unearned “green” credentials.

If you are pragmatist, you will recognize that it is a little of both and understand it is part of the dance.

Lyle has it absolutely right. It’s important that both candidates are exposed to solutions like the Volt and understand there is a win/win solution to the economic and national security issues effected by our dependency on oil.

Give McCain credit. He could be any number of places. Of course it doesn’t hurt that Ohio and Michigan are swing states but we don’t need leaders to do the right thing for the right reason, we just need them to do the right thing.

On a completely different note, here is an article about a new bus being used in Denali National Park. Serial hybrid just like the Volt. So yeah, this technology is definitely scaleable and definitely real:

The Japanese government and their corporate keiretsu system helped out Toyota bigtime in the 90s when they were developing the Prius. The Prius is definitely a product of Japan, Inc. … their whole country … not Toyota by themselves. The German government helps their industries all the time. Same thing with Korea, etc. American taxpayers have helped out Chrysler in the past. Fortunately, Lee Iaccoca turned Chrysler around fast and they paid back all their loans easily.

I personally just want to MAKE SURE that these new electric drivetrains like e-Flex get a strong foothold in market as soon as possible. I’d love to see GM leading the pack in the next big wave of automotive technologies. It ought to be a BIG damn wave too … bigger than the internet in the 90s probably … and the internet was definitely a world changer. I want them to catch up with Toyota (Japan, Inc.) on all types of hybrids and get way out ahead of them in ER-EVs (series hybrids).

You need to keep in mind that the REST of the auto industry simply DOESN’T play by the same “rules” that us self reliant, independent minded Americans expect. They don’t “play fair”. The Japanese have been doing this for DECADES. They don’t think about business the same way we do. You should read up on how the Japanese do business with their keiretsu system and government intervention, etc.

I hope GM makes the case that the Volt should qualify for McCain’s $5000 credit for non polluting vehicles. If the Volt is going to be above $30,000, and it looks like it will, then it will need the credit to get to higher volumes, and eventually lower prices.

The government provided a $3,000 credit to buy a Prius (not even made in the US). McCain should certainly see that the 40 mi. zero gas / zero emissions Volt should qualify for the $5000.

    Self-deprecation is the exception.

Saying, “I’m an idiot” goes a lot farther than saying, “you are an idiot.” Let’s be civil. Informative, substantive statements are more appreciated by the general public than pointed jabs meant to troll for a reaction. Lyle:

Do you think that your contacts in GM would share enough information to let you do a post on what they intend to do to bridge over from today until the E-Flex technology becomes widespread in the product line?

Many have commented that, if the Volt becomes available at something in the 40-50,000/year range in 2011/12, and a total of 200K are produced through 2015, as Mr. Lutz has said, that’s not going to be enough to solve GM’s financial problems.

In light of Mr. Lutz’s recent comments about the Beat and the Cruze, what are they going to sell? Are there going to be any significant improvements to the 2009 Cobalt, for starters? Is there going to be a dual mode Malibu, and when? What else do they have in mind for the next super critical 3-4 years? I know that they do not want to give away their secrets, but come on, a least give us some hope.

I think that this is a legitimate topic for GM-Volt.com. The answers to these questions may determine whether GM has the resources to actually produce the Volt. Indeed, they may determine whether GM is even around to do it.

Emission standards were a political football but what industry doesn’t have its points of contention. I think the auto industry should get all the support it needs. Ironic that oil companies keep ringing-up large profits. GM (auto industry) can’t put the economy back in balance, bottomline.

We cover every possible weird scenario available to man and attach all of the lowest degraded reasoning for corporate actions possible to heap on a company. At the same time we are downgrading our country, our economy, our military, our government, our leaders and spilling out bile on this site that would be better put somewhere else.

I blame myself for saying things from the heart sometimes that maybe I should just keep quite about. But let’s stop finding a fiend behind everything that happens. Let’s think before we post. Do you really want everyone to see and read some of the things you may say in your comments?

I hope your comment helps veer us towards a more productive discussion. If more of us speak out against blatant partisan comments, perhaps we can lure back the more informative commenters.

    #36 noel park,

Good assessment of where we are and where do we go. I am in the process of trying to purchase a Honda Civic GX NGV because here in Texas there is good availability of NG. This auto has a range of about 333 miles on a full tank , 24 to 36 mpg. Price is $24,590 plus TT&L.Home fueling is available from PHILL of FuelMaker in Toronto Canada. The vehicle is on the top of the list for clean burning autos. This is not a total solution but all forms of alternative energy should be considered at this point. GM has about 25 models of NGV’s but these are not available to the every day consumer. They are in fleets and municipalities. To me this would be a great bridge for GM to use for future sales until the VOLT is available to all. NGV’s are already here, we don’t have to reinvent the wheel! Why is GM not selling us these autos ??
Take care, have a great weekend,
    Good sight http://www.rightautos.com

Texas yesterday approved a $5 billion plan to add more Wind Power to their Grid. Currently we generate 5,000 megawatts from wind. This plan will add capacity for 18,000 megawatts. That’s a lot of power. Unfortunately, they will soon start adding an additional $4 per month to each customer’s electric bill to pay for this. Not sure how reliable this West Texas wind is. I once asked a Texan why it is so windy down here, he said: It’s because Oklahoma sucks.

You are right on with your questions to Lyle. Those questions are ones that need to be answered. Good answers would serve to give us belief that GM has a plan to survive until they can turn things around with the Volt and its siblings. Let’s hope for some real answers.

I’m sick of this CRAP! There should be wind turbines and solar panels in every possible spot in this country! We should drill everywhere, including on the White House lawn, for oil. We should line the tree huggers up on the edge of the Grand Canyon and one by one kick them in their rears to send them to the bottom and have this broadcasted on live tv and radio around the world. Also we could make a sport out of watching birds fly into wind turbines. Who cares about some damn birds! The tree huggers would rather send our boys off to war to die for oil rather than see birds get whacked. The politicians in this country better get their heads out of the sand and soon before the people rise up and start a revolution. I am so sick of this crap! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!

Wind turbines most definitely do NOT need 30mph winds…
there was one put up here in Pickering, ON by the nuclear plant
The wind isn’t the best there, but it was a pilot, and it was already zoned and adequate to build the windmill.
It runs at 18% “efficiency” – lower than ideal, but it is also not an ideal spot for wind.
Everytime I go by on the freeway, it is spinning away.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OPG_7_commemorative_turbine

    That was 7 years ago.
Technology has improved greatly since then.
Also, note the minimum wind speed – 16km/h – thats a “gentle breeze”
Especially since it is quite tall – 117m. (almost 400ft)
There could be no wind felt at ground level, but certainly 16km/h up there.

Regardless of what the politicians say about their plans, we need to keep pulling and pushing GM to continue the Volt program and expand it beyond just the Volt.

GM needs a better hybrid system in the Malibu. The additional cost of the GM hybrids are very hard to cost justify. They need to improve the hybrid by a factor of two or more.

If Toyota can do it with the Prius, GM should be able to produce a serial hybrid or a Prius like vehicle to compete directly with it. They are going to need much more than the Chevy Volt and the Saturn hybrids to save themselves.

Hello, wake up! The Volt has an ICE that is a polluting vehicle!”.

Yawn / stretch. Thanks for the input. But, that’s why I said, that I hope Wagoner makes the case for the Volt.

Take a look at #59 Tagamet’s link to the article about the meeting. According to that article, ” McCain wants to boost innovation by offering purchasers of zero carbon-emission cars a $5,000 tax credit. A graduated tax credit would apply to purchases of lower emission cars such as the VOLT.”

The only question remaining is, making a case for: “how much $”.

You have to have at least some batteries to get anywhere close to 50mpg, which gets a lot of its fuel efficiency from regenerative braking.

Like GW Bush himself said in one of his State of the Union addresses … we’re ADDICTED to oil. Yes, we probably need to drill for more oil to keep America from getting the DTs (like with boozers who try to quit). BUT … like with any addiction to drugs or alcohol, our OIL addiction is killing us a little more every day. We’re about to blow out our liver before long.

We gotta do a LOT more than just drill for more of this toxic product called oil. We gotta stay away from the damn liquor store. Cut down on the hard stuff at least. Going to hybrids is a bit like switching to beer and wine I guess. We gotta do something, we all know that now. At least America is finally admitting that we have a problem. That’s the first step you know. :)

Just watch T. Boone Pickens’ commercial. He’s an oilman. He’s telling it like it is. He got rich off of getting us addicted to oil. He probably feels bad about it now. Even if prices for gas go down for awhile they will SURELY go right back up before long because the rest of the world is getting the addiction to oil too … especially China and India. Like Pickens himself might say, they are slurping down oil from the world’s “oil feeding trough” like there’s no tomorrow.

The WARNING light on America’s dashboard is flashing red … “CHECK ENGINE”. If we continue to be stupid and do nothing or very little, we’re going to throw a rod in the engine and blow the damn thing up. A LOT of us will be stuck on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere. We definitely need to CHECK THE ENGINE. We need to ELECTRIFY that engine with cars like the Volt. Not in 10-15 years like we’ve been doing, but RIGHT NOW. Electricity is much more flexible “fuel”. That’s one of the reasons GM calls it the e-FLEX powertrain.

When I was a kid I remember a song by Huey Lewis called “I Want A New Drug”. That’s what America and the whole world needs … a NEW drug besides freakin’ oil. Oil is making everyone sick, sick, sick. Electricity is much better for the world. :)

Once again GM has gotten it all wrong and let the foreign car makers take the lead. This car looks like a golf cart. Why can’t American car companies build a car that’s desireable and functional in a green environment. I’ll take A Tesla, thank you very much. Now if this car looked like an Infinit G35/G37, I’d be first in line to buy one.

Has anyone seen the Honda FX Clarity ?
