Chevy Volt Video Update

June 8th, 2008 | Posted in: Video

I haven’t done one of these in awhile, but since things really seem to be at a turning point and with all the new visitors we are getting, it seemed like a good idea.

If you look at what videos get to the millions of views level on YouTube, you often find they are more about entertainment than subjects of importance.

Anyway, spread the word if you can. Here is the video:

If you can’t see the video, the YouTube link is here.

    Hi Lyle:
We need a way to enter multiple orders for the T shirt instead of one at a time. Save on shipping too. P.S. Very informative video!
    Thx

You kind of like ‘the Shadow’ in the video. Only your eyes are in darkness, hehe.

I like the ghost rider point at the end too.

EDIT: I clicked the edit button, just because it is wicked awesome!!!

You da man, Lyle! I visit this site at least twice each day for my Volt fix and I can’t thank you enough for helping to make the dream of electric cars a reality.

This is one of those rare sites where the content is fresh and the comments are intelligent, thought out and civil. I believe this is because we all want so desperately to rid ourselves of foreign oil.

Keep up the good work and we all love videos.

I echo Tim’s sentiments, I’m in the first few thousand on the waiting list for the volt, and visit the site a few times a day to get my fix.

I’m going to keep hoping they’ll introduce a lower prices vehicle that, in the long run, will appeal to much more of the population than if they try to make some more coin off the first few produced.

If they charge more for the first few, that price will be in the news and a majority of the public will just shrug off the vehicle permanently.

Great update, Lyle! Along with many others, I visit this site quite often —sometimes several times a day— and when it seems I might be able to contribute something useful, I post a comment. As an example, for anyone who hasn’t seen the excellent 90-second video of you at VoltNation in NYC this March that GM placed on their “GMnext” front page……

    Thanks Lyle.
Just ordered my T-shirt. I’ll wear it to our company picnic in a few weeks. I made up some cards some time ago from old business card stock I had. The cards say “JOIN THE EVOLUTION — http://WWW.GM-VOLT.COM“. I carry these with me all the time and give them to people that are interested in learning more about the Volt. About your comment “save your money…”, I see a lot of people on the site doing just that (myself included). I find myself justifying every discretionary purchase vs. saving for the Volt. What an Un-American way to buy something… actually saving for it and paying cash. Ha! While this won’t be the first car I’ve paid cash for, it will be the most expensive. Keep up the good work.

has there been any conversation on how the Volt’s technology stacks up against that of AFS Trinity’s ? http://www.afstrinity.com

Seems like a lot of similarities…..albeit…AFS has some high energy capacitors in theirs.

    8 bmd…..
AFS Trinity has been of great interest to me since they first announced their design, and I talked to one of their senior guys before they went to the auto show in Detroit this January. He wasn’t optimistic that any existing automaker would consider licensing their approach (which I really like too!) because of the NIH (not invented here) factor. He actually felt AFS Trinity might actually wind up either selling kits or doing conversions (or both). Their primary product, I believe, is large stationary flywheels used by power companies, factories, etc for electrical energy storage, and they seem to have a good bit of financial muscle. So if GM doesn’t get their Plug-in Vue right, maybe I’ll see if a 2008 or later Saturn Vue could be converted the way they did it (RWD via a 200HP electric motor, etc ….& FWD as the car is now) —about 370HP total & HUGE torque. It’s really great to have a choice of EV only, gas only or both (4WD) for slippery boat ramps, stop-light derbys, etc! Talk about bragging rights ….who else would I know that could chose between 1) NO gas & 0-60 of 12 secs, 2) 25mpg & 450 mi range, or 3) BOTH & leave Mustangs in the dust at all the stoplites?

First time poster – I really enjoy your site and appreciate what you do for the future of America’s automobile culture.

I have one question that confuses me about the Volt – what does it mean by having a 450 mile “range”? I understand that the first 40 miles are from the electric portion of the engine only and then the gas engine kicks in to resupply the electric engine when it gets to 25% power left.

I was under the impression that you could just keep filling up and driving it like a normal car for extended trips if needed, but I got confused when I heard the 450 mile “range” portion. Can anyone help me out here?

I want a stripped down VOLT. Just wheels, glass, headlights and a squeeze bulb horn. Just so I can use less oil for transportation. My deposit is saved and ready. If Volt one is too expensive then I’ll wait for Volt two. I’m buying a Chevy for my next car. From an American Union plant with Union workers. I have always hated that about the reporting. I prefer to say that the vehicle has a 1,200,000 mile range. I wish they/people would stop reporting the range of the vehicle… who freaking even knows the range of their own vehicle??? It isn’t important as long as you can fill up and keep on trucking.

I understand why range enters the conversation. An electric car’s range has always been a concern. GM calls the Volt an electric vehicle. So, naturally, people want to know the range. People may not be familiar with the range extender concept. That is where education comes in. A big part of this site involves spreading the word. Lyle never called us names because he knew something before we did. Pay it forward.

GM should give Lyle the first production Volt, because of all he has done for GM, and for us. So far, he has done more to advertise the Chevy Volt than GM has, IMHO.

I can’t wait for the local Chevy Volt car show, where owners get to show off their customized Volts, and brag about how little gas they’re used since they bought them. I expect to see a lot of “Zero gas used” signs at the shows. It’s gonna be sweet.

I was not even into cars before the Volt. If GM screws this up, I’ll see you at Volt’s Anonymous. I just read this morning that Toyota Prius sales in the US were 37% off last year’s pace in May, and that the main factor is constraints on battery supply, globally. That must be a tad irritating for Toyota dealers, to say the least. (source….. http://www.just-auto.com)

Meanwhile, GM is 9,000 NiMh batteries short for its mild hybrids and is said to be talking with Michigan-based automotive battery supplier Cobasys, according to several reports last Friday morning quoting unnamed inside sources. GM wants the expertise Cobasys has in packaging batteries and related intellectual property, the Wall Street Journal said, quoting “people familiar with the matter.” Those sources would not discuss the potential price of the company, other than to characterize the cost as “modest”. (source….. http://www.mlive.com/businessreview/oakland/index.ssf/2008/06/gm_in_talks_to_buy_battery_mak.html)

Toyota’s NiMh shortages are alledgedly the major reason they can’t meet the demand for Priuses and GM’s emerging “green” image is on the verge of turning “brown” because of NiMh battery problems, which makes me wonder if there’s a systemic problem in the NiMh industry (such as nickle shortages) that we don’t know about yet. In any case, crazy at it may seem for GM to buy back Cobasys, it may be the smartest move they can make in the short run!

#51 nasaman — thank you for the post on the shortfall in NiMH auto battery supply. I’m sure it is a big frustration to GM, Toyota and all the other companies who, just at the moment the product is hot, cannot get enough to sell. Conversely, I’m expecting the shortfall to continue for months and maybe years With a big ramp-up in consumer demand, and considering the time it takes for an industrial process to get up to respond, I’m imagining a better supply/demand ratio will be achieved, but slowly.

Yesterday I talked to someone who drives a Prius. Prior to yesterday, I have never been up close to one. The people in the car had never heard of the Chevy Volt. They were well versed in it when I was finished with them. They drove out of the parking lot and the absolute silence of the Prius was astounding to me. I look forward to the day when all vehicles are silent.

Thanks very much for both of these timely & informative articles! Let’s hope GM management learns enough from the painful experience with “proven” NiMh batteries to avoid these pitfalls as best they can with the forthcoming huge Li-Ion contraxts for Volt —e.g., they need to:

    1) Place contracts with BOTH Li-Ion suppliers, not just one, and
    2) Both contracts MUST include large volume purchase agreements*

*See my rationale for this in post #2 of todays’ new topic on Volt battery contracts

The word on the Volt is getting out. This morning Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade on “Fox and Friends” talked about 4 minutes on rising gas prices and how they were both waiting for GM to produce the Volt because they were ready to buy.

Steve Doocy even echoed Lyle in the fact that our country is at a turning point and all cars should soon be electric to ween ourselves off foreign oil!

I have already e-mailed “Fox and Friends” and told them to contact Lyle.

O.K. I have had my coffee and Volt fix for the morning… Time to go to work…

P.S. Statik is in the clothing industry… He should be in charge of mass producing the T-Shirts!

Way to go Brett! Get the word out!

I missed Fox_N_Friends this morning, but the mention of the Volt fell on a LOT of ears through them.
I’m also hoping as, Jim I mentioned, that Lyle’s “PULL” at GM might have some influence regarding SOMETHING in the rollout of the Volt – anywhere from captive fleet testing of the pre-release to at least a nod a being able to lay down a significant deposit to reserve a Volt V 1.0. GO, LYLE, GO!!!!

I am so going to buy this car. I drive 15 miles to work every day that means that I won’t have to use any gas during the week. That in itself will save me around $100-200 dollars a month.

    Hey, Lyle,
I have never been able to see the videos that you embed in the posts. Is there any way you can possibly include a link in your messages that points to an OUTSIDE source for the video that I CAN see? Such as Youtube, or wherever the original video came from?
I really want to view these.

I share your optimism of the Volt. However, I reckon that competition like CityZENN will give the Volt some headache. Good for the rest of us though.

CityZENN is truly electric at 250 miles per charge (less than 5 minute per charge) [@30K] vs Volt 40 miles per charge w/ a gas engine. [30K - 40K USD]

Lyle, we all appreciate what you’ve done. Personally I do believe this website and the Volt Nation have kept the focus. GM continaully upped the ante on getting this car to a green light.

America’s addiction is $440,000,000,000.00 per year and fast rising. We could solve any social security issue overnight from redirecting America’s car – gas addiction to electric, American fueled choices.

    Thanks.

I knew I wanted a Volt as soon as the concept car was introduced, I have been a die-hard GM guy for years and was extremely hesitant to even consider buying a foreign hybrid. I plan on rocking my Volt t-shirt at every car show I attend this summer. Thank you Lyle for showing GM that if (I mean “when”) they build this car, we will buy them!

Volt, you should be complete by now and the battery should provide more than 40 miles on a charge. Chevrolet, you are really going to miss the boat again, behind Toyota and others, if this car is not released very soon. We have had this technology for years and all of the car companies knew that gas prices were going up, so what’s the hold up? Please don’t say batteries, they are here and have been here. Make Americans proud and get this car on the road, and don’t get greedy on the price of it either. You certainly don’t want all of this hype to backfire…. I’m really looking forward to participating and driving an American prodigy. Thank You

Hopefully if this is a modest priced car, and it will not “jolt mis bolas” (volt) before time, in case GM decides to jack-up the price.

I hope it is affordable, because even tough I was considering a Prius, there’s no way I’m paying what they want for that car, millions of consumers are thinking the way I do.
    O Que No?

Hi, I think one important thing Chevy is going to screw up is the overall design of the power train system. From the sounds of it it looks like after the batteries are depleted and fossil fuel engine will kick in to drive the vehicle. It will be sad if they desin the engine as a direct drive rather than an electric drive system. Basically they need to look ay how trains are built. Yes trains have Diesel fossil feul engines but the trains are totally electric and use regenerative braking to recharge the batteries as well. The batteries should only be used durring start and acceleration. Once the vehicle is up and moving say past 20 Mph the diesel engine should kick in and drive the vehicles motors and recharge the batteries. The engine should also be diesel so bio fuels and other diesel alternatives can be utilized. Unfortunataly the automakers are too far into the pockets of the oil companies to design a vehicle in this way because it would get too good of gas mileage and be very cheap to operate with the availability of other fuel alternatives.

    Steven,
Do some more reading. The Volt’s wheels are only EVER driven by electrons. The “fossil fuel” engine, will be able to run on E85 and at some point will have a diesel option because it’s targeted for world wide distribution. GIven that (even with a fossil fuel engine as *backup* to maintain 30% SOC), being able to drive for 40 miles daily FOREVER without a drop of fossil fuel can be considered the old saw of Big Oil controlling everything.

Made in USA, what a joke.
I was all over the VOLT a couple years ago when it was first announced. At that time the price was announced at $25,000.
I was finally going to be able to shed my Hondas and buy a GM product for the first time in 30 years.(77 Cutlass). But now they have pushed it to $40,000 – What a joke!! I’ll bet 3/4 of the people who signed up would unsign if you made it possible on the site. I guess I will be looking at the Plugin Prius for my next car. What a shame for the USA.

Countless times in history great ideas have been ignored by those that can make them happen or by consummers themselves. When someone picked them up, awsome things happened. I just think it’s about time the car industry is seriously investing into Edison’s dream of an electric car and that people is also seriously considering going for it. By the way, isn’t it ironic that some GE technology is being used in your car? (GE was founded by Edison, as you already know).
I hope this new electric technologies turn out to be a great success for you and other manufacturers… We all need it to be.
