Your stupid you need a bigger tank for the ppl that travel alot would be better to put in at least 18 gal tank now thats where you get peoples attention. You 18 gals to use with say about 60 mpg then you have a great car for everyone and GM comes alive again.

Looks like the range is now 300 miles. At 230mpg, that places the fuel capacity at under 2 gallons. Store a 3 gallon gas can from Walmart in the trunk, and you've got 1000 mile range.

But not everyone lives in the east! Try driving across Texas with that much gas where at times gas stations are few and far between. I have been following the Volt information since they first annouonced the concept and I am a little disappointed that the gas tank keeps getting smaller. I think 8 to 10 gallons would be good, and I can see how 12 may be too many but the miniscual 6 is too little.

Range matters. Is GM limiting the Volt to a $40000 city car? 640 mile range is the only choice. If they need a smaller tank, at least make it 10 gallons.

The total range doesn't matter to me. I only drive 32 or so miles a day, my wife about 10. Gas, CNG, propane, E85 all don't matter since this will be ALL ELECTRIC miles. I'll probably keep 2 gallons in the tank to save the weight. My ICE and generator will be brand new when the rest of the Volt is wore out!

When going on trips, I need my pickup because of trailer and other heavy junk going along. No small/medium car can do this, including Volt.

I need 2 Volts please :) Can you imagine the total coolness of a two-car garage with a pair of matching his/hers Volts?! It blows my mind! License plates: HIS-VOLT and HER-VOLT. Hehe.

Oh, and when you get to it GM, an electric Silverado would do nicely as well.

aren't these saddle tanks associated with after-crash fires such as in the pickup trucks that were previously fitted with them?

Good thinking with reducing the tank. Saves weight and space. Here's an idea that we should be toying with. Natural gas or propane. In the US I reccomend natural gas since its so plentiful. Ethanol is just a scham, and I refuse to buy it. Its nothing more than nonsense created by the agriculture lobby, and does nothing to reduce our energy dependency. This car however, powered by natural gas would take us leaps and bounds. Here's how. We use the battery to go to work. Then we use the natural gas which is plentiful and cheap for weekend and spare time. We save big then. Gas has yet another advantage. For the people who would use the gas motor very seldom, natural gas gives you another advantage. It doesn't break down like gasoline or ethanol. If the gasoline sits too long, it could damage the back up motor, just like any other motor that sits too long. Natural gas doesn't have this problem. In any case, I plan to convert mine to natural gas or propane.

I have a few questions:

How will using the car's electronics affect range? Use the heater, lose a few miles? A/C? Radio? Power windows? Rear-defogger?

I am very excited about the Volt. The back-end is kinda wimpy, but the front end looks pretty aggressive (good). Sorta like the new Camaro.

I hope it hits in 2010, and I hope they keep all the goods in it. A bit more range would be really nice, but it's not a deal-breaker on this car.

No one has mentioned how much we should expect to pay for the electricity it'll take to charge it...doing the simple math, 16kWh times what...7c/kWh? (I don't pay for electricity here, so I have only a small clue as to how much it costs). Soooo, what...a whole dollar to fill the batteries? At est. 50mpg and about 50 mile range on batteries....that'd be equivalent to $1/gal...gas is $5.20/gal here...so that is quite a significant difference.

Another question: Will we be able to leave the IC engine running while parked to charge the batteries? I'd like that as an option.

The big question is how long to charge, and will the ol' friends like me when I plug it into their house when I come to visit.

A final word: GM needs to start innovating, as opposed to their current imitating. The Volt is a good direction, but they'll need something that is both different AND better than any other car company if they wish to survive. A little late on the HHR/PT Cruiser wannabe, Camaro is their answer to the Charger and Mustang...finally with a couple hybrid options...selling off the Hummer (gawwwd), and toyin with the idea of ditching Saturn (or Saab, or whatever POS division isn't making them any money)...Same with Ford, but I don't like their cars...their Crown Vic gets worse fuel economy than my 12 year old 4200 lb chevy...seriously...what year a re we in?
