Rashiid,
I agree. A 40-mile volt for $30k sounds reasonable. A 120-mile volt for $40k sounds like it’s worth the extra $10k.
But $40k car should also make me feel like I’m in a James Bond movie — it should feature a High Quality Interior, leather seats, electronic gadgets. Bond girls are optional, especially since my girlfriend would take exception to that feature! Anyway, GM may be accustomed to selling Suburban/Yukon/Tahoe vehicles for $40k — but I sure as hell am not in that demographic. When I see one of those vehicles on the road I’m amused that the driver would blow that kind of money on such an oversized, wasteful, and hard-to-park vehicle — at least that’s what I’m thinking when I’m not trying to avoid being killed while the driver watches a movie and puts on her makeup, or whatever.
Anyway, the Volt must meet all of the published numbers — range, price, seating capacity, etc. Acceleration is probably the most negotiable number, since the Volt is an everyday car. But it does need to climb hills and merge easily with Interstate traffic.
Since it’ll be best for commuting, a smaller 2-seat version (the Micro Volt?) might be an acceptable way to cut costs, too. We’ll just take my girlfriend’s Prius when we need a bigger car.

Don’t let the “perfect” become the enemy of the good…
Why couldn’t GM mainstream the volt with Firefly batteries (albeit with less electric range) + ultracapacitors and upgrade to the Li-ion batteries once that technology becomes less expensive?
“This breakthrough delivers a formidable jump in specific power, energy, and cycle life. The resulting products possess performance parameters comparable to advanced materials (Lithium and Nickel-based) batteries, but at costs far below these high performance batteries.”

Tim,
I agree with you: It isn’t JUST the Texan draft-dodger who has wasted and continues to waste hard working American taxpayers’ money so as to create a national debt that will last for decades. Yes, many others in the corridors supported and encouraged him. And a nation voted for ALL of the above (in some instances TWICE)… well OK Florida WAS fiddled, but it was close enough to implicate a LOT of prople in that travesty of ‘democracy’.
Let’s put it another way then – what if JW / Congress / whoever had instaed spent the current $470 billion (and rising) cost of Gulf war 2 on developing a car to get America off oil instead of on securing a supply to continue the present profligacy?
Let’s give them $10 billion to develop the car (Less than 1 month of present Middle East military expenditure yet still 20 times what GM quoted as R&D cost of for EV1 – so plenty over the odds to develop our EREV for the 21st century. This leaves $460 billion in ‘loose change’: Enough to give a $7400 rebate to each and every one of America’s 62 million registered car’s owners towards their next volt OR enough to give away (at say $50,000)9.2 million Volts to the public and replace 14% of America’s ICE cars.
Upon reflection I’ll stick to laughter and save my tears – in 50 years we’ll probably be fighting over food and water instead of oil.

Tim, #17:
Don’t blame it on the poor workers. It is the total incompetence and greed of the “management” of these giant corporations which has led us to our present sorry state.

Tim #17,
First those high-cost unions drove those jobs out of the rust-belt and into the sunny South in the 80s for cheaper non-union labor. Then NAFTA sucked those jobs south into Mexico in the 90s for cheaper Mexican labor. Now in the new millenium the factories in maquiladoras are all empty: the jobs are all in China now. Where does it end? With penguins making toys in Antartica, because Santa’s elves expect December 26th off?
Are Chinese labor costs less than 1% of US labor costs? You bet! Are you paying less 1% of what the product would sell for if it was made here? I don’t think so.
If the Volt is not made here in 2010 or 2011, then I will buy a Company X plug-in that IS made in the U.S. And don’t give me that “yes, but GM is a US company” crap. GM stockholders take the profits from that cheap labor, but you can’t tell me that any greater % of them are US citizens paying US taxes, unless you know who all the stockholders are. And if you want to tell me that GM pays more US taxes than Toyota, you better show me the source and the numbers. The only difference I see between Toyota and GM is where their design team is located. No wait, Toyota has a US design team now too, I believe.

This is not the first time GM has developed software for one of their vehicles. If software is truly holding things up, then they need more developers on the team.
The engineers are the one group of people at GM that I do not blame and have never blamed for GM’s past blunders.

Toyota is paying NO US taxes at the plants it opens in the US. I know someone who has relatives in the area of one plant… Toyota is paying no local taxes ..the jobs at the plant are paying just above the poverty line..(23K/yr is poverty .. Toyota is paying $12/hr that’s 24K/yr). The local taxes are being raised to pay for the infrustructure they gave to Toyota for free. (Roads..sewage..power etc.)
It’s estimated that GM pays $2,000 per car in US taxes.
GM is kept completely out of(#2auto market in the world) Japan.. and could you see GM building a plant in Japan..
then not paying any Japanese taxes!

Your facts are way wrong. They are making $30.00 an hour in Kentucky. That’s more like 60K a year….In Kentucky, one of the poorest states. They did Kentucky a favor by creating jobs there and not in Japan. Smart move for the town that let Toyota build a 1.3 billion dollar plant with tax incentives. Companies all over the country get deals like that. My company is tax exempt for 10 years because we built sidewalks, street lights, and curbs. We have created over 150 jobs in an area that had no jobs. Who wins? Everyone here….Who really cares anyway, if someone wants to work for 23K a year, let them.

All American toys are unreliable anyway. If you want a good quality toy, you should buy a Toy-Yoda …made in Japan.

My DieCast came in the mail in about 2 weeks. The one thing I never noticed before until the model came is that the sides of the car are very flat. I like the over all design style but the DieCast really helps to see the real shape.

Luke #21, I understand what you are saying and agree. Although the Bond girls would be nice, wifey would get upset. But then again, if GM includes the ejector seat on the passenger side, I don’t have to worry too much about wifey.
But for $40K, the car should really be exceptional even beyond the EREV.

No model for me after yesterday, thank you very much.
Peter K, #14 & #25:
Amen.
We borrow the money from China, et al, to pay for the war. China sells us our cars (wait for it). China takes the money it earns selling us our cars and loans it back to us to finance our massive debt. Don’t we think there is an end to this somewhere?
Tim, #17:
Don’t blame it on the poor workers. It is the total incompetence and greed of the “management” of these giant corporations which has led us to our present sorry state.
In advance of the primaries, NPR has been doing a series on the fate of the textile workers in South Carolina. This morning’s piece was particularly heart rending. This stuff is all part of the same issue.
If we cannot produce goods for our own consumption because our neighbors want to make a decent living, something is fatally wrong with our whole national model.

I think today should be “snarkiest comment day”. Whoever can come up with the snarkiest, most negative and sarcastic comment wins a free model Volt. It helps if you were completely gung-ho for months on end and did a quick 180 based on a rough cost estimate.

Tim #17,
First those high-cost unions drove those jobs out of the rust-belt and into the sunny South in the 80s for cheaper non-union labor.
P.S. Lyle, sorry for all the flak you’ve taken. You don’t deserve to be attacked personally.

Tim & Kurt – Guys you can’t blame this on the engineers. As a software developer myself, I know that software is one thing that should _never_ be rushed and has to be 100% perfect or bad things happen. In the case of the Volt this could mean lives or battery longevity.
This is not the first time GM has developed software for one of their vehicles. If software is truly holding things up, then they need more developers on the team.
The engineers are the one group of people at GM that I do not blame and have never blamed for GM’s past blunders.
P.S. Just ordered my Volt too.

I just bought one minutes ago and got a confirmation email.
Yeah, I’m back even though I said I wouldn’t be. I won’t be able to afford a 40K Volt regardless.
I just wonder why GM can’t let these go for what they said they would. It won’t be ads and it won’t be Katie Couric or any other news program that REALLY sells Volts, It’ll be neighbors and colleagues unlike any vehicle to date. This means that the first buyers won’t just be owners, they’ll be Ambassadors. Something for GM to think about.

Nice idea..
If the toy was made in the US I’d buy one.
..yes I would pay more to support a US job.
I’ll wait for the real thing.
also..#34
Toyota is paying NO US taxes at the plants it opens in the US.

Oh yeah, facts to back my claim!! Notice that aricle was last Feb.
And you wouldn’t buy the toy if it was made in the U.S. because it would be too expensive. If that kind of rationale was commonplace, we should stop eating vegetables because illegal immigrants harvested them.

None of you are getting your toy Volts. GM never had any intention of selling them.
The toy Volt was just a ploy to distract you from GM’s real goal … making and selling toy Hummers. I have some secret video of all 750 toy Volt’s crushed and standing in a pile. That piece of video will be included in the documentary I’m releasing later this year:
“Who Killed The Toy Volt?”
All American toys are unreliable anyway. If you want a good quality toy, you should buy a Toy-Yoda …made in Japan.

Got my Volt in the mail about a week and a half ago. They took a hint from Chrysler with the overly plastic interior but the fit and finish looks pretty good overall. Mines got a set of pretty dependable run-flats but I’m fairly certain they’ll never see the open road, considering the fact it’s bolted to the base.
Now 3 years until I get a real one.

how cool!
My DieCast came in the mail in about 2 weeks. The one thing I never noticed before until the model came is that the sides of the car are very flat. I like the over all design style but the DieCast really helps to see the real shape.
