GM to Unveil Cadillac Provoq Concept

January 7th, 2008 | Posted in: Brand

GM’s CEO Rick Wagoner will be speaking tomorrow at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). We hear than among other things he will say, he will be introducing a new Cadillac concept called the Provoq.

We don’t know much about the car except that it will offer petroleum-free driving. Will it be an E-Flex variant, or a pure fuel cell? We’ll have to wait and see.

Enough with the concepts, give us some hardware.

As so many have pointed out here, enough with the fuel cells too.

“GM’s CEO Rick Wagoner will be speaking tomorrow at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)”

Does anybody else finds it interesting that the CEO of the world’s “largest” AUTOMOBILE manufacturer is speaking at a Electronics show? The future is electric!

I would like to order one Chevy Volt and one Cadillac Provoq to be delivered in 2010 or 2011.

I hope it is an E-Flex variant, and not a pure fuel cell car. Fuel cells are so far in the future for the average user. They are a waste of time, energy, and money at this point. Perfect the E-Flex design and then move onto something else. I have a plug in my garage. I don’t have hydrogen in my garage. Nor do I have a clue where to get it.

    Looks like a Lamborghini.

I’d guess it’s equipped with a hydrogen powered ICE.

Hey Marty McFly, although that car is beautiful, I don’t think it is the Provoq.
    It’s the Caddy Cien.

You’re right. I figured the only way to power a performace car like that (without petro) would have to be with an hydrogen ICE.

I’ll bet it’s a hydrogen fuel cell. I’d PREFER A BEV as an ALL ELECTRIC ONLY. But that’s not where GM is heading. Too bad, because the technology is here, Now.

Hopefully it will not be a huge hydrogen fuel cell Escalade.

Since they claim it will be among the “elite group of the world’s most capable cars” and they talk about living in a world free of petroleum, it could be an all electric performance vehicle. But prolly not…

The only reason any of these automakers brought out hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) vehicles is to meet the requirements of the deal they stuck with California’s Air Resource Board (CARB) when they gutted the Zero Emmision Vehicle (ZEV) mandate.

I think the irony is that the Volt will still be getting far fewer ZEV credits than each of the phoney HEC’s any of them make.

That’s the only reason that GM is still working on Fool Cells…

    your tax dollars at work.

When government “helps” and chooses technologies instead of letting free market forces do that job only the “special” interests win!

My brother-in-law who works for GM says that it’s electric… That was a little humor for avid readers :).

I am on the side of optimism and am betting, isnce this is an electronics show, the concept will not be hydrogen. One can dream, can’t they?

Great IDEA. Cadillac in the past is allways the Standard of the World.

So that being said Cadillac is where GM shows off its absolute best and technologies that only the people who can afford it will buy it.

One thing that Cadillac forgets is that the top of the line cars help bring in people to buy the cheaper cars.

I.E. The cadillac 16 way back brough in people to buy the V8 models etc.

Cadillac really needs a high end car like 100k. They also need a very large sedan to be in the Benz S-Class range. This in Hybrid form would make an excellent limo for the new President!

Don’t get big high hopes about a soon upcoming Cadillac EV. The purpose of this concept showing is to gauge how much interest there is in a Cadillac branded EV or EREV. They have seen the interest in the Tesla and now they want to do two things; One, see if the general public would go for such a car in the future, and two, show the media that GM can be just as green as any other company if it wants to. This concept does not mean there is a secret “skunkworks” program for a Caddy EV, soon to be released.

If there is enough buzz generated by the concept, development may follow. If Cadillac does pursue an EV roadster, Tesla could easily go the way of the Tucker.

    Yes, I agree.

Correct spelling is “Fool Sells”. In other words, they are trying to Sell us on a concept that’s a dead end, in order to Fool us from getting interested in technologies that will really work. This is why all the big oil companies pushing hydrogen. Classic red herring.

  19. Scott H Scott H Says:

Yup, yup. If hydrogen ever does come around one day, it’s a by-product of oil refining. They can’t lose. Whether it fails or flourishes, they can’t lose.

And another thing, about the intentional misspelling. I guess in their minds it’s to look more “cool” or “hip” to use a phonetic spelling than a correct one. Really silly, if you ask me.

When I Google/Youtube Provoq it turns up a lot of gay Asian videos where they strip down to their very skimpy and very gay underwear. I’m not sure that’s what Bob Lutz had in mind when deciding on the name of the vehicle. Not that it’s any of my business….

What I think is going on with GM and the fuel cell business is that GM probably got some of the $1.2B Freedom Car money. GM must show something came from that project and with the money spent. Never mind that nothing has been done about Hydrogen Economy Infrastructure. Just another example of how our government wastes money by the billions. If the $1.2B had been spent on battery technology where would we be now. I am sorry for being so cynical.

Why not unveil the Volt at the CES?

GM is definately catching the attention of individuals like myself that have driven Honda and Toyota for last 20 years. The look of the Cadillac Volt is very appealing. I am not a cadillac buyer (poor product, horrible repair and maintenance costs). Market the design of the original volt as a sedan, and not a sportscar. The target market for these vehicles do not want to be seen in a sports car. Get away from the sports car design.

    Thank You,

    Future electric buyer!

GM - do NOT let this vehicle detract any engineering time or effort from the Volt!!
