Susan, Global Delta is a GM standardized platform it will use in all of it's manufacturing facilities wherever they may be to add localized drivetrains, engines, etc. like a diesel engine for the Opel in europe and a flex fuel engine for the Volt in the US. Oh, and it's not the NHTSA standards that give us dumb gas guzzlers, it's dump consumers who demand these types of vehicles.

Wait: Lyle, what does "Global" Volt... mean???

Does this mean they will only make it for foreign markets? Not for here in the US?

The entire rest of the world shares one standard: The ECE Rules. Thats why they have been getting the decent cars...

Our US NHTSA standards stick us with dumb gas guzzlers with lousy mileage...

I thought it was expected to go to the Lordstown, OH plant. I don't live there or anything, so I have no vested interests either way it goes, but I'm wondering if people there are disappointed. I hope not. This is awesome, and exciting, news either way it goes. I'm looking forward to driving all electric. Woo-hoo!

Dear Hamtramck Assembly Plant Worker:

I was delighted to see that your plant will give birth to the most important car that has ever been conceived, the Chevy Volt.

I have committed -- for both environmental and for national security reasons -- that my next car must be a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

So, please hone your skills because the day when Chevy Volts are quietly driving off your line is not too far away!

Hopeful Volt Owner,
O.Jeff

I live in the Detroit area. It would be cool that in 2010 when the first Volts come out of the Assembly line that we could be there in person. Maybe GM could have some type of big PR (which they are good at) program and allow general public to view the first ones being produced. That would be history in making.
