The Volt project was actually conceived just after the ’06 Detroit Auto Show, so it’s not unreasonable to expect a 2010 year model available by the end of ’09.

R., correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t the Volt ‘unveiled’ at the Detroit Auto Show in January of 2007? So he is talking about ‘introducing’ the Volt in 2010 or 2011? I hope that means production, and I really hope that it just might happen a year early, because the market is starting to leave GM behind, and they are losing ground too much already to get left at the altar on the transition to EVs. Or does the ‘industry window’ start substantially before a mockup gets shown in a car show? I hope that the latter is true, because I really want to see this car soon.

In the G.M Shareholders meeting today this is what Mr. Wagoner said about the Volt. “In response to a question about when the company would introduce the Chevrolet Volt, the hybrid-electric concept car that G.M. unveiled at this year’s Detroit auto show, he said a target date had been set but declined to reveal it. He did suggest, however, that the usual industry window for new technology was three to four years” (New York Times, By RITA K. FARRELL

GM needs to get this car into full production soon because if they don’t the foreign automakers will become the dominant ‘green’ vehicle builders in N. America.

Ziv: I totally agree about Crown Victorias. Same goes for Implala on GM’s side. If they got the two-mode system into the Impala they would sell a million of them (although police departments and taxi firms would have to start paying higher prices for fleet vehicles if they wanted hybrids).
