A123′s Li-ion Batteries Power World’s Fastest Electric Vehicle

The Killacycle broke the record for the fastest electric vehicle of all time on April 3rd and 4th. The bike was able to do a quarter-mile in 8.1 seconds, reaching a speed of 156 miles per hour, and can do 0 to 60 in 1.5 seconds.
The bike is powered by 990 lithium ion cells made by A123, the same battery maker trying to produce the battery for the production model of the Volt.

This awesome display of power and proof of the success of A123′s development process, moves us one step closer to a real production car. This news also comes on the heels of Cobasys’s announcement that they are building a new 18000 square foot Li-ion battery development facility.

New Version of the Volt

Reports began circulating yesterday indicating that GM plans to unveil a new “iteration” of the Volt at the Shanghai auto show on April 22. These reports seem a bit over the top mainly because there really is no working model of the Volt yet. Some possibilities are that the vehicle will have a different physical appearance, perhaps more mainstream, like the one in our previous post. Or maybe the concept will appear in a form with a hydrogen cell connected to the electric motor. Another scenario might be that a true engine along with actual battery packs may appear.

In any case, a palpable sense of suspense and persistent building of hype and momentum is clearly underway. We’d love to hear if anyone has any other knowledge or ideas about this.

Interview With Tony Posawatz

Good new interview with GM Vehicle Line Director. It can be listened to here. Nothing really new, but continues to support GMs position that the Volt will be released.  He discusses the parallel process between vehicle and battery, as well as safety management concerns.
