We’ve heard it before we’re hearing it again. GM’s Bob Lutz has officially claimed 2010 as the target year for Volt’s production. Reuter’s press release here. There isn’t any doubt about the engineering and the technology, its all there. We still hear how its all about the batteries. But as we have explored, the batteries exist in prototype, and Li-ion batteries are already in use in other electric vehicles. Plus surely the people behind the scenes at A123/Cobasys are certainly giving the go ahead for GM to say its 2010. An interesting NEW fact is that a full running prototype is due out by the end of this year!! Any takers?
So stay posted, more news to come…

This announcement is an aggressive schedule. 2010 delivery is “just around the corner” and the Dec 2007 prototype is being quickly worked. I don’t feel that all of the pieces are there, but the technology is about there. For the batteries, chemistry can be considered well defined, but the large capacity cells still need pilot builds and quality control processes. Making 1,000 Volts per year is a respectable quantity, making 10k or 100k per year (~2012?) is an significant amount that requires significant plant & equipment investments. Wow, we could be on our way!

I had a message today from GM’s Rich Lannen, a follow up to my podcast with him from the Chicago Auto Show http://www.podtech.net/nextgear/technology/1685/engineering-the-volt and sort of a pre-emptive strike if you will about what you may, or may not, hear from Tesla.

I expect you will see photos of the underhood of the Volt show car
posted by Tesla…
I wanted to give you the heads up…
The Volt show car…is a fiberglass model with a golf cart electric
motor and lead acid batteries…..
Typical show car “styling” model….
I hope people dont try to draw an analogy between
the golf cart and production intent. Thats just silly!!!
Our production intent activities are moving along
nicely….
We have several “milestones” set for 2007 and early 2008
Lutz is speaking accurately in his latest quotes.
Right now…we have no show stoppers……..RL”

Thanks Matt..somehow this doesnt surprise me. I knew the car was just a “statue”, and not the true vehicle. But I do like the competition with Tesla. Competition always fuels ingenuity and change.
Rock on.
