Congratulations Al Gore!

February 26th, 2007 | Posted in: Politics, Public Opinion

Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth won the Oscar last night.

Its a great thing that a documentary about something so meaningful and frightening can reach this pinnacle of popularity. We have move passed the denial stage. To me it speaks to a sea change in public consciousness. Finally all the streams of knowledge are converging in the public eye. Global Warming has become a household word.

Twenty five years ago, when I first started studying this topic, few people believed or cared about it. Now, thanks in large part to Al Gore, its mainstream. Next we need to move from thoughts to actions.

If you haven’t seen the film, please do so as soon as possible and spread the word. Hold house parties to see the film with your friends and neighbors. Write your politicians.

Buy a Volt (when you can!)

Together we can make a difference.

Gore’s movie won the wrong category. . . It should have won Best Science Fiction.

Global warming hysteria is starting to really worry me. I’m afraid our society — and I really mean our whole global civilization — is going to squander immense resources on this “problem” before finally realizing it was mostly bogus. At the same time I’m afraid we’ll be ignoring real and pressing problems like Peak Oil and the deteriorating condition of the oceans due to pollution and overfishing.

The truth is, we won’t know for sure about global warming until decades from now. In 40 or 50 years we’ll probably have a pretty good handle on it. Until then I suggest we focus on problems that are more tangible and immediate.

I couldn’t agree with you more. They admitted that they “stretched the truth” in the movie. Al Gore is a big idiot.
The reason I want a volt or something like it, isn’t because it’s good for the planet. I want it because it makes since, for my wallet and in general. I don’t need some scare tactic work of fiction to tell me anything.
I don’t deny mans ability to change the planet and the environment around him. I don’t doubt that. However, tracking the weather and keeping records hasn’t been going on that long at all. The last 100 years is about all and only 50 of those years have we been using any kind of accurate equipment do it. Prior to this it was farmer John writing it down in his daily logs. If we are going to understand our planet we need data, not just the last 50 years or what we thought the temp was from farmer John.
The volt and cars like it will succeed because it makes since not because of the environment. Let’s face it; man does what is best for his bank account not the trees around him.

Al Gore talks the talk about reducing greenhouse gas emmissions, and is a carbon emitting king, both in his flying around and his personal homes, and tries to cover it up with Greenwashing of the most transparent sort. George W is vilified by environmentalists and has a pretty Green home.
    Now that is just odd.
I like this site and I love the Volt for one reason, the Volt is a great concept car that I would dearly love to own, I really don’t enjoy the Gore propaganda.

I like Gore about as much as I like the idea of a prostate exam…but wow you guys are harsh on the [very kind] individuals who host this site. I suspect there isn’t much news out there on a day-to-day basis regarding the Volt. The Tesla people on the other hand, are AMAZING at keeping the public informed on an almost hourly basis. I don’t like the political talk either, but there is a connection here…

WOW..We apologize for any hint of politicizing! We must recognize that the reason for electric cars is primarily two-fold: to reduce carbon emissions to prevent the catastrophe of Global Warming, and to reduce hydrocarbon use and avoid the catastrophe of Peak Oil.

It’s really not about Al Gore, it wouldn’t matter if the message came from Donald Duck. The point is that society is now at a watershed and it is this frame shift thats going to make the commercially available electric car a reality. We were simply applauding that fact.

    LJ,

From my opinion the deliverer of the message is just as important as the message it’s self. Global warming is such a hot topic right now that a lot of the time you can’t have two people with opposing views even talk about it without people getting off topic.

To me Al Gore is just not a trust worthy person or a person with great morals. That being said I don’t know the man this is just MY opinion of him.

As for my opinion on global warming it is just way too soon to say with any certainty that man is the cause for any of the global warming at all. This is not to say that we aren’t the problem but I don’t really see how we are at this point in time. If some day I am proven wrong then so be it.

Like I hinted to in my first post the reason for the volt or other cars like them even living “Green” is because they make since. The ideas are good ones and technology has finally caught up to the need. When you think about it why doesn’t it make since to use very little to no gas in your daily drive to work? Why doesn’t it make since to have a house that uses very little electricity to heat and cool its self? I am not a tree hugger or some environmentalist; I am just being very realistic about this stuff. If we can build houses like the ones at http://enertia.com/ why do we need to build houses that are horribly inefficient? I can answer my own question its cost but the ROI on things like this are usually immediate or with in a few years.

All of us every where need to live smarter, build more efficiently and drive more efficiently not because it’s green but because it makes since. The tech is here now and what isn’t here yet is coming soon.

LJ - Wow is right! Surprising how people polarize on the success of other people and ideas. I say “Way to go Al!” I also say blacksheep needs to use spellcheck or something to hide his lack of language skills. Credibility is severely impaired when you repeatedly use “since” instead of “sense”. I’d believe a public figure who’s been following this trend for, what, almost 20 years before I’d believe somebody who doesn’t have a full grasp of our native language. You do have a good point about the wallet, but there are a multitude of other reasons why EV’s are a good idea. Try health issues, an overseas war that is stretching way beyond projections, just like Vietnam. Seems to me if we spent less on that war and more on subsidizing PV installations and technology, we’d be way ahead. Even if we shift ALL the CO2 over to our electric generation plants, at least they are usually out away from the population. And we still have the opportunity to cleanup the carbon emissions there, as well as find and use other economically green ways of producing electricity. Hopefully we can get it together in time. Not hanging my hopes on GM either, but maybe they can pull it off.

    GFalconer,

I am sorry if my misuse of the word “since” in any distracted you from getting the actual point of my post. I am no literary major nor have I have claimed to be on this website or any other. Despite the obvious error I still believe my point was accurately conveyed.

I do not believe I have personally attacked anyone on this board besides giving my opinion of Al Gore. Which I said was my opinion and not supported by any facts. My opinion of Gore is more of a personal feeling that he could do more and be more efficient then he actually is. I know he buys all “Green Energy” for his home; however I do not believe he needs to use as much as he does, considering he is always preaching to the general public to be more efficient in our lives and not just with energy.

My problem with the movie is that it is billed as the truth, and that is simply not the case. The movie is based in what he believes to be the truth and twists the facts accordingly. The fact is right now nobody knows what is causing global warming and if it is actually happening. Like I said before we don’t know because we don’t have accurate records for a long enough period of time to prove or disprove anything. For people who are billing themselves as scientists they should never say for certain that we are causing anything with the limited amount of data we currently have a stand like that would be irresponsible and it would be ignoring the facts. On this topic we should just agree to disagree, if at some point every major climatologist says for a fact that we are the cause then so be it.

As for the war, I have way too much to comment about this on a PEV website dedicated to the GM Volt.

GF your right about the positives for the Volt and PEV’s in general are enormous and go way beyond things we have talked about on this site. The General Health of people is a huge positive; I believe people in the heavily populated areas, like LA, DC, NY and others will benefit greatly from it. Moving the CO2 back to the power planets is also great because the power plants can be and are regulated. As we become more reliant on the “Grid” regulations can become stricter to reduce CO2 and other emissions. The most obvious benefit is that as the Grid becomes more “Green” so will our cars.

The Volt and others like it will be a welcomed change to the car industry. I can’t wait for this car to go in to production, when it does I will be placing an advanced order for one. I appreciate this site and others like it that give updates about the Volt and general information about the technology. I just didn’t like politics and a BS movie being brought to a site where they really don’t have that much to do about the actual car. If someone in congress decides to kill this car or others like it then I would see a reason for posting.

GF, hopefully this post is more grammatically correct so you will actually be able to read it and not try to discredit me for having bad grammar.
