Congressman Gets to Show Off a VOLT

inslee-volt.jpg

A washington democratic congressman named Jay Inslee got to show off the Volt to his colleagues on Capitol Hill. He also is on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and seems genuinely enthuiastic about getting the vehicle to market. His is quoted as saying the Volt could be on the market in 5 or 6 years (2012, 2013).

This is another good step forward for us. GM has alos been pushing the government on developing alternative energy sources.

EMFs and Neurodegenerative Disorders

emf

There continues to be talk and concern in the blogosphere about sitting on top of a massively powerful electric motor, and the resultant exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). There is some weak epidemiological data in the literature for certain risks. An intriguing study from 1998 can be found here.
This study examined the incidence of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) among electric utility workers and found a significant increased likelihood of the disease. Since the cause of ALS remains unknown, we must give this some thought.

Perhaps some research must occur before this car goes mainstream, but as of now this data and concern remains speculative.
I have invited the senior author of this study, Dr. Loomis to give us his comment right here on gm-volt.com. Check back and look for it!

Good Ol Dub’ya

bush
It was a banner day for us environmentalists, and for the Volt. Ol dubya finally said it in last nights State of the Union address.. we must do something about climate change, and he even recommended we use less gasoline, and more alternative energies. The wheels of change are turning!

Mitsubishi Press Release

Its become pretty obvious that the GM Volts E-flex system is and will be the new paradigm for automotive propulsion. I say this because of all the propaganda buzz starting to flow from every other auto maker; Ford, DC, and now Mitsubishi.

The Japanese companies Mitsubishi and Sanyo have now announced their plans to have auto-ready Li-ion batteries for 2010 (the magic date).

The war is on! Lets go GM.

Battery Developments

It is increasingly clear that the heart of this car, the debate surrounding it, and other potential cars for this market comes down to the Lthium-ion battery. Weve had some interesting comments about prohibitive costs; see it here.

We are also finding out that the Japanese are ahead of GM in bring these big batteries to market.

Two recent press releases give us more information:
1. 95 cells were delivered to UC Davis for use in developing a prototype plug-in Chevy Equinox. Read more.

2. Daimler-Chrysler announced that it is releasing 20 plug-in electric sprinters than can dirve 20 miles on electric only power, many of which are using Li-ion batteries. Read more.
